> After some research I decided to use 5-htp as an anti-poopout agent for clomipramine to boost some extra serotonin. I started with 100 mg and worked my way up to 300 mg in 3 divided doses of 100 mg over the day. The only effect I have after 2 months of consistent use is severe nausea every day, even with the divided dose and no antidepressant effect whatsoever.

Marty,
I meant to respond to your posts on the other board today but Dr. Bob redirected you first. I was very surprised that no one over there was alarmed at the possibility of serotonin syndrome. (Larry, of course, was on it right away once he heard about the clomipramine.) Though clomipramine does not have exclusively serotonergic activity, it does have strong 5-HT reuptake inhibition. You are playing with fire here. MUCH TOO MUCH SEROTONIN!! That is probably why you feel so sick. This can be DEADLY! Literally. (You may already know this but I wanted to make sure.) You might want to contact Linkadge on the regular PB board who landed in the hospital by combining too large of a dosage of an SSRI with a serotonergic herb.

Please be careful.
Kara

Hi Kara,

Thanks for alarming me ! I am however well aware of the dangers of serotonin and especially the serotonin syndrome. Clomipramine didn't have much of an effect anymore so an option was to augment it with for example, 5-htp.
I know of a lot of symptomes of serotonin syndrome such as euphoria, drowsiness, sustained rapid eye movement, overreaction of the reflexes, rapid muscle contraction, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk and dizzy, shivering, diarrhea. etc. But I didn't think the stomach nausea I experienced was a symptome. Anyhow, I wil stop using 5-htp, cause it didn't give me any relief anyhow. Thanks again for your concern.

Marty

OK, Good. I'm glad you were aware and knew what you were doing. Some people who post aren't.
Take care,
Kara
