> fish oil can be GREAT stuff for mood and mania - but, you have to take high doses (some recomend 9grams) and it is much better to get the quality stuff - not the crap you get at Giant or Food Lion.

Hey:
I'm diagnosed with bipolar as of many years ago now. Not sure if I am a "success" story or not, but am taking a high quality fish oil supplement after trying some cheapo brands. It does seem to make a noticeable difference, but I am still staying on my meds, Neurontin -- gabapentin -- and Zyprexa -- olanzapine -- while augmenting them with it and now inositol and magnesium.
I just started taking about 8 grams of inositol per day for depression -- the state I've been in most recently for several months -- and it is helping though must be cautious since it can at as low as 3 grams per day contribute to hypomania in some people.
Bipolar is such a balancing act! Can't just add antidepressant meds or alt therapies for depression without being wary of inducing hypomania. I must still take the mood regulating meds for now certainly.
But the fish oil has been very helpful, though subtle I think, in its benefits. High quality stuff makes a BIG difference I've found. I'm trying Carlson's Finest now at 800mg EPA per teaspoon, and taking about a tablespoon per day to start. It's lemony and not fishy at all. If it did not sit well with me I was going to try Nordic Naturals highest EPA capsules, but this is more cost effective and seems to make a big difference if you can tolerate drinking fish oil straight. I found I could, plus you can make salad dressing out of it. Cool! Haven't tried that yet, but am thinking about it...
Best,
