Kava with an SSRI

Posted by Simian on December 19, 2003, at 0:01:28

Does anyone know if there would be any problem with taking kava whilst on an SSRI?

Hmm, I just read that kava keeps serotonin in your brain longer.
There isn't any potential for serotonin syndrome from mixing kava with an ssri is there?

I've read that kava does effect the 5-HT1a receptors as an agonist... or one of the kavalactones i mean. But they still dont know if this has any clinical effect. In that respect, it's possible, I guess, but I haven't heard any expert opinion one way or another. I have a feeling it wouldn't cause a problem, though. One thing to way out for is that kava might extend the half life of certain medications that use the same detox pathway as kava, since Kava can effect the liver in a bad way. But again, that's only my own speculation, i haven't heard or read anything by experts.

Well, I had a few cups of kava last night after taking 10mg of citalopram and 10mg of diazepam through the day and the only difference I noticed was I had more euphoria than I normally have on kava. But it didn't last very long unfortunately.
I feel quite hungover today though. Although its not really unpleasant like an alcohol one.

When I take kava kava with medium or long acting
benzodiazepines occasionally I can become really depressed the following day. I just thought I'd let you know.
It might never happen, but in case you come down with a case of the blues after doing this I thought you might find it helpful. Usually a cup of tea or anything mildly stimulating is enough to lift it for me.

Ok, thanks.

Alprazolam always makes me feel depressed the next morning for some reason. Thats on its own too.
