You make no distinction between people who are deliberately provocative, insulting and hostile - whose posts are clearly meant only to provoke and sow discord - and those who react negatively to such people. This idea you have that such posters should be ignored is unreasonable. They hijack posts. They say things intended, clearly, to provoke negative responses. They are uncivil in virtually everything they say.
Maybe if they were one in a hundred posters here, ignoring them would be easy. But this is a sparsely populated board. When someone suddenly appears, taunting and insulting people, what do you expect.
I don't think it's so hard to make reasonable judgements and moderate helpfully. You go round in round in circles about this. But I have been on boards for years where a moderator simply says to a "flamer" - enough. You're blocked.
Everyone else can tell the difference between flamers (or, as others have called them, trolls) and those who simply react negatively as any normal human being would react negatively to being gratuitously insulted. Why can't you?
I can understand grey areas with people like Lou, who irritate others but are not intentionally hostile or cruel. With people like Eric, though, the situation is different. I am someone who normally walks away from these conflicts, but with him - enough is enough.
brklyn23 was simply trying to alert people to the fact (fact - s/he documented this) that the poster in question has done this over and over again, here and on other boards.

I do too, basically. I guess maybe brklyn23 was following this guy Eric, LostBoy around and making this claim that he was known from usenet groups and was a troll or some such thing. I guess maybe saying this once, with some foundation might have been much less uncivil-- but calling someone a troll is not the best thing perhaps.
It's the difference between "common sense" moderation and moderation by a rational algorithm, The first one is more human and makes more sense-- the secone one is, if well-designed, more logical and more capable of being explained, and rule driven. One says- I know one when I see one, the other says, one can be identified because it (he/she) falls into this or that category of my system, because they ahve done this or that specifiable thing.
I suppose it's a matter of temperament and teachability--
