The Illusion of Participation

Posted by Moishe Pipik on August 28, 2013, at 17:17:08

In government, it's voting. In business, it's meetings, performance reviews and employee surveys. Here, it's the occasional nod by Bob that a suggestion is interesting, worthy of consideration, etc.. Members are led to believe that they're really being listened to, valued, etc.. But has anything substantive actually happened to this forum over the past many years? Aside from the precipitous drop in membership/posting, nothing important has changed.

I'll not suggest anything anymore, Bob. Fool me once..........

Only difference is at one time we were listened to as suggested self-esteem board, withdrawal board, & Neurotransmitter board. Other various board were here before I joined so at one time we were listened to. Phillipa

Don't feel bad. I took an extended leave. Returned for peer support. I am not really interested any more in the ulterior motives of the site's creature, but I'm grateful for it. And I am not going to get involved (she said indignantly) with any dust ups between members, or about the growth or demise of the site.
It's like picking at a scab. The injury will never heal until you stop festering with it. And then, you are left with a scar.
I have a scar.

I have the worst autocorrect on this device. I am sorry, I meant creator, of course. What he does in his spare time is of no business of mine.
Whoops!

But it's hard to find peer support if there aren't many/any peers present to do it with.

That is very true. I find I get lost quickly in large communities. This is like being in a commune, though. Pretty sparsely populated after the initial period of growth; and it is uncertain whether such a small number of people can keep it interesting enough to continue.

I think part of the problem with getting Bob to change is that the community is often divided on which way the change should go. Some people want him to do x while others actively resist his doing that and in fact they think things should change more towards not-x.

And I think that quite often there are process things going on... But I do understand that saying that is like saying 'you are only feeling that way about that because your period is due' or (I'm coming to realize) 'you are only feeling that way about that because you haven't done your three hours of work for today'.

At least the last one is in my power...

Participation is hard... There is controversy over whether plants move. Not talking about venus fly-trap... Talking more about things like sunflower heads following the sun... Talking more still about growth as a form of movement. If you watch such things when they are appropriately sped up they look like movement. Our perceptual abilities bias in various sorts of ways... I wonder if we look like sunflower heads moving to those zippy little flies that are next to impossible to swot...

My point being: That things are much slower than they used to be because there are less posters / because the posters that are still around are around less frequently. When things were busy... It was only too easy for me to be sucked into spending most of my life here. Now... It is still tempting for me... But that is mostly out of habit of my way of interacting with the boards, I think. If I were to check in... Once a week? Things perhaps wouldn't seem so slow...

But then there is an issue of utility with respect to how soonish one needs / wants responses... And numbers of responses... And so on...

I don't know what to say...

Except that still, the boards are what we make of them. It might be my numeracy issues but I don't really notice the time stamps...

I don't know what to say...

(Which is why it is always a constant surprise to me to see just how f*ck*ng verbose I can be)
