The New Deal

Lost in all the discussion about how to deal with an irksome poster is this apparent offer to renew supervision of his website by Bob if we attempt to be supportive. I think there are significantly more examples of kindness, support and reassurance on Babble than hurtful, disrespectful and uncivil posts. So do we need to change, Bob, for you to show more of a presence here?

Toph,
You wrote,[...do we need to change?...(as a condition for Mr Hsiung (to show more presence here).
The condition by Mr Hsiung is that members (reassure other posters)
I am unsure as to what you are wanting readers to think when they read that. If you could post answers to the following, then I could respond accordingly.

A. Do members know what they are to be posting that constitutes (reassuring)?
B. If they do, what are they to be reassuring about?
C. Which posters need to be reassured?
D. Could Mr Hsiung's condition to members here in question mean if there is posted a warning to a poster that a drug could be addictive, would you think that Mr Hsiung's condition to members means to assure the poster that is being warned that the drug is not addicting?
E. If because a post that contains statements that could arouse anti-Semitic feelings is posted and another member objects, could it be thought that Mr Hsiung's condition here could mean that other members post that the anti-Semitic statement is OK to post and reassure the poster of the statement that it is OK here?
F. If there is a condition to the members to have Mr Hsiung not wait as one match could start a forest fire, then any victims of the fire are to be blamed because they could be in the class of members that did not do the condition that Mr Hsiung states here, after the fact by the way?

I don't know Lou. I guess I just found it odd that Bob seemed to be putting conditions on his returning and/or staying. It's kind of like a cop saying he or she will only protect the community if all citizens try to be good. Frankly, I'd like to invest more time on Babble again someday because I hopefully will get something out of participating, not so that Bob will return.

Toph,
You wrote,[...its like a cop saying that he/she will only protect the community IF all citizens try to be good..].
That is very good!
You see, there is much more to this that could be unbeknownst to some. They could be uninformed and it is oh so easy to persuade he uninformed.
Thank you for informing the readers here. No human being has to be blamed for being a victim of hate.

Your associations with my comments strike me as a non-sequitur Lou. What specifically did you identify with in my post?

Toph,
You brought out that Mr Hsiung's condition for him was that the members, like the people that the cop would not enforce the law unless there was a condition by the cop fulfilled by all the people in the community. What that could mean is that:
A. The cop would not stop someone from being beaten UNLESS ALL the community members fulfilled the cop's condition.
Now here it is conceivable for some to think that we could have that one is being a target of hate here and Mr Hsiung will not stop the posters of the hate because the members do not fulfill his condition, which he posts now, after the fact. And one could think that if one is being a victim of hate here, that the hate will not be stopped because the victim is to be blamed because he/she was a member that did not fulfill the condition. And to go further, the hate could not be stopped, not because the victim was in the class that did not fulfill the condition, but THAT THERE WAS SOMEONE ELSE THAT DID NOT FULFILL THE CONDITION. There are historical parallels to this that Mr Hsiung's prohibitions to me prevent me from posting here.
Lou

Not to speak for Bob, but I think he was proposing a hypothetical not saying how he runs things here Lou. Gotta go to bed.

I agree, it's more positive than negative here. But I think the negativity is still significant. Like a medication's benefits could outweigh its side effects, but its side effects could still be significant.

I meant "you all" in the sense of "y'all", not in the sense of "every one of you".

It's interesting that you saw that as a condition. In an ideal world, the cop would try to make the community safe whether or not the citizens did what they could themselves, but if it seemed to him they didn't, I could imagine him feeling powerless and going to Dunkin' Donuts.

I guess I see it as a feedback loop, which is conditional in a way. If I moderate, y'all may be more likely to reassure other posters, and if y'all are more supportive, I may be more present. To be the change I wish to see, I'm trying to be more present.

My rephrase: if we work together for a common goal, we'll all get more out of participating.

Bob

I guess this is tangential, but I want to say that as I approach retirement I'm getting some of my sense of humor back at work. I appreciate the whimsey in your post. It's sort of like y'all are approaching retirement also.
