Babble a Reflection of American Society

Posted by ron1953 on July 1, 2010, at 10:40:26

American legislators and "mainstream" society have, unfortunately, done too much to marginalize and penalize individuals who don't adhere to so-called norms. We have the largest prison population in the world, a war on drugs, legalized racial profiling in places like Arizona, wars against peoples who are not like "us", ad nauseam. All based on fear, mostly irrational fear. The crime and punishment mentality doesn't improve a damn thing, yet continues unabated, despite the historical evidence of the harm it does. The answer has typically been to throw even more laws and more money at the "problems", as opposed to rethinking the failed approach.

I see Babble's crime and punishment mentality much the same way - doesn't work, but beat it to death anyway.

Hi Ron,

I agree with that (no big secret there)

What I really wanted to add that I don't think is discussed enough is the effect the blocks have on other posters. I miss posters when they're blocked. Some are not personal friends, and I have certain posters that I like to follow or touch base with. When you have several of your friends "gone" at once, its like you're blocked too. Then you get buzy...and before you know it, another poster is gone. And I think it spreads, like "kindling", to compare it to a med term. What happens on one board effects the "mood" on other boards, etc.

**Note-Sorry, Ron, that I posted my thread for a dog board right after yours. My friend and I were just talking about how therapeutic our dogs can be when feeling blue. I would have waited had I seen your thread first, hope you're a dog person and forgive me!!!

I think it does work, which is one reason Babble is safe and supportive.

Good point, maybe posters who get blocked don't realize what a loss that is for other posters.

I see the parallel between Babble and the prison where I worked for a year. I would say that it could be hard to tell the two apart.

Biggest difference is that the offenders are locked up.

Write Up=Please Be Civil
Administrative Segregation=Block

Whereas everyone is here voluntarily.

I think there are parallels to any system in which limits are enforced.
