Only Solution is Edit/Delete Option

Posted by psych chat on November 1, 2009, at 12:33:40

The only solution is to allow people to edit/delete their own posts. If they find links to their comments Twittered, they can simply go back to the original thread and delete them.

This is the only way to ensure privacy and confidentiality, and one aspact of a respectable way for a medical doctor to manage a mental health forum, imo. While it may have not been an issue in the past-when this forum was initially created-it sure is now.

Just looking at the traffic statistics of this site, and the relatively few posts, one can only imagine the various intent (both good and bad) of those searching and collecting information from this site.

http://www.psych.org/Departments/EDU/residentmit/ethicsprimer.aspx

"For psychiatric patients, because of the widespread stigma and many cultural contexts of mental versus physical illness, confidentiality is even more important than in most areas of medicine (American Psychiatric Association Committee on Confidentiality 1987).

The Principles go on to note that this is an era of growing concern about the civil rights of patients and the possible adverse effects of computerization, duplication equipment, and data banks (Section 4, Annotation 1). These advances in technology may provide relatively easy access to data, but because of the sensitive and private nature of the information with which the psychiatrist deals, he/she must be circumspect in the information that he/she chooses to disclose to others about a patient. The welfare of the patient must be a continuing [dominant] consideration (Principles, Section 4)."

Above ethics code concerns patient/doctor relationships and research, but still-it the philosophy of the American Psychiatric Association.

The new option may satisfy some people, but given that someone can bully another by simply replying to one's post, then subsequently Twittering the comment, I'm not sure. The programming would have to be revised to completely block comments from Twitter of those who opted out. Still, when the person comes back here, they will see the comment of the person who did not wish to be twittered - but that is not so bad (imo) because it least that person did not, in effect, remove your post from here and redistribute it on Twitter.

Psych Central has a policy that prohibits another individual from taking anothers comments and redistributing it.

See Forums at Psych Central, Rules and Administration.

Not sure if Bob did or plans to do this.

I posted an attention thread on social, meds, psychology and have notified some by e-mail if all do this and change their settings then no one can facebook or twitter right? Anyway it's better I hated seeing the boxes. It's funny I saw the delete buttons when checking settings on facebook . Now if I could change my settings here believe me anyone can. Good very good of John Grohol on psych central for respecting privacy. Love and thanks Phillipa

Yes, and I've used some support forums where they are so concerned for your privacy and safety, that they enable you to simply delete your login id/account - which automatically deletes all your posts associated with that login id. It's very simple to implement a feature such as that one.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU CAN GET SCREWED

I Googled a very generic phrase "lamictal pdoc daughter agitated" and a post from this site (and several others that don't employ a security protection layer) was in the 5th page of Google.

http://www.dr-bob.org/cgi-bin/pb/mget.pl?post=/babble/20030823/msgs/253355.html

Ever go through a child custody battle? Well, add an additional word about your wife (or husband) such as "restaurant" if they work in one, and just that phrase Googled will bring up that one comment, maybe on the first Google output this time, then the Googler can go back and collect ALLLLL the posts written by that person who came here to merely seek some support.

Meanwhile, the one fighting for custody who finds the posts could be an abuser - but yet there's no proof he is physicially abusive. So now, thanks to the security of this forum, there is proof that the mother is "mentally unstable" and poof! She loses her little ones.

That is not at all unrealistic example. So you say-don't post personal stuff or use the internet. Too late if you have been using this site. People didn't even think of this stuff barely - even 2 years ago. That post was from 2003.

I'm suprised people are not more concerned about this. I can imagine the devastation of a parent who posted something here, or on another insecure forum, losing custody of her child. A person's life can be easily shattered. But oh well, I guess she shouldn't have posted here then. Keep your mental health troubles to yourself or save it for the 10 minutes you have each month with your PDoc.

p.s. not being sexist - it can and does happen the other way.

about editing my post and twisting it back on me

----That was Dr. Bob's edited response to me----

**Dr Bob why did you leave the next line of my post out?** which is...

**still shows my name on a particular tweet, once this particular tweet is clicked on, a psychobabble thread pops up with my name on it.**

My name doesn't appear on the twitter hompage, that wasn't my point. It appears on a certain tweet once it's clicked on.

I feel that was rather deceiving of you to dismiss that very valid point, but most computer savvy people know exactly what I'm talking about.

Either you don't understand how it works or you are trying to deceive people. There is only 2 outcomes to this very serious scenario.

I'm very concerned. Cactus
