Yes, an additional security measure. Many (most?) websites I use frequently, have them on all their forms. Safer. Requires a live person to be filling out the form inorder to type in the changing characters each time. I didn't know till just now either, although Dr. Bob mentioned it in passing recently. I didn't know what he meant. Now I get it.
There have apparently been some problems with spam Babblemails? I think he'll post something (if there are more questions) when he has time...

many anti spam codes (the squiggley words a human must type into a box to prove they're not a bot) have an audio component to assist those of us w/ visual impairments or those of us who are visually challenged.
maybe even a USA kind of thing for protection under the ADA. being a USA site and using USA servers perhaps Dr. Bob might want to join the trend of making accessibility more readily available to ALL users who choose to join and use babblemail.

I'm sure zen or others can explain more - I only know a little, but I'll try.
One way to spam many people/email addresses at once is for a piece of software - by itself - to fill in forms and send messages. It is pre-programmed (that may not be a word) what to write, what to automatically put in the different fields, say of our Babblemail form. No actual person has to be present to keep sending hundreds or thousands of these...
With the anti-spam code, it won't work as only a live person can read the text (which changes each time) and type in in correctly.

So this is what passes for drama on Admin these days?
How on earth am I going to distract myself?
You can worry about swine flu, maybe I could too, but be buggered if I'm going to do the gardening or anything useful.
They should have a med for this. Maybe it's called a kick up the bum?

You have no idea how incredibly dramatic I am while typing in one of these anti-spam codes.
Really.

At least he's not making them too hard to read. On other sites, I usually fail them so many times that they eventually get easier. Are they designed to get easier after repeated fails?

I've never been optimistic (or, I feel disappointed to say, incompetent) enough to find this out for myself.
Do you think we should worry that the ease of copying the code may allow whatever it is the code is designed to prohibit?

Actually not roll-your-own but Vbulletin board type BBSs use Captcha(TM) codes only for those who haven't registered before, such as search or message functions.Once you have registed with a board and established yourself as a member you don't have to go through this, pardon my opinion, asinine hurdle to type in hard to read "codes".
And we're all registered here, right ? You have to have your name and password to enter and send a babblemail anyhow.
Ergo, you're already registered.
So just put the *&S*& code when you sign up for the board and save us all a hassle of typing in some silly code -every- single time we send a babblemail.
Because on every other board and most use some form of Vbulletin, you don't have to type a code every single time you search or PM someone once you have signed in.
That would fight spam much better.
This really has to go, its bad for people with vision problems and its a purposeless hassle. It solves nothing about spam as all "legitimate" senders already have to type in their name and password.

Hmm, I guess the real problem wasn't babblemail, but email replies to babblemail. Actually, spam pretending to be email replies to babblemail. Which the anti-spam code didn't stop.
So I'll change it back. Thanks for the feedback!
Bob
