Self Harm forum

Posted by Maxime on December 31, 2007, at 20:19:24

I was thinking that it would be helpful to have a forum to write about self harm. I think there would have to be strict rules about what can and cannot be posted such as: no links to pictures that show self-harm; no graphic descriptions of self-harm.

I would just like a safe place where we could support each other. I want to stop cutting, but until I do, I could use some support. Anyone else?

well, there's lotsa cutters on psychology.
I agree, its a topic that can be misunderstood and sometimes flares up as a result....
But other topics cause flares too....
IMHO SInjury fits on psch quite well inasmuch as the reasons we do it are very psychological.
There are some good sites on the net that i at one time had bookmarked, but unfortunately have lost them as its not as much an issue for me as it was.
I also think that researching it on the net when you are feeling fragile may not be the best option either.
As for starting up another board...I think Bob is trying toreduce the number of boards cuz things get too spread out.
For example, if you were to post in the self harm forum, I would proly never see your post cuz I stay mostly on psych. It takes too much time to go to too many boards. I pop into social upon occasion, and admin. If I need to blurt, I goto writing.
Thats my thots from what I have seen here.
I think its OK on psych, and if you are feeling misunderstood, then say so (LOL! without getting a PBC! Now THERE'S a challenge for ya!). But I have seen it done delicately...and successfully. Sometimes if a thread is taking a turn you don't like, you can start a new one, with a diff angle, and I have done that too.
You can also bmail trusted babblers to try and get some help with a thread thats not going where you might like as well. Sometimes its easier for a diff person to help get back on topic.
Many options.
And sometimes it works....and sometimes it DOESN'T!
But I guess we take the good with the bad..
Take care,
M

If Dr. Bob is reluctant to start another forum on PB, perhaps a special area in chat could be set up.

Now that would be helpful. Great idea!

Oh crap, I feel like SUCH a wet blanket!!!
But there ARE two chat rooms. So if you wanted to chat bout SI you could use rm 1 as its used less cuz blocked posters can't get in. Then if someone comes in just tell them you talking SI....
Just that babble is pretty limited.
Its consists of Bob and his basic equipment.
Its just him. Not the university.
Things move SLOW round here....
I wonder if it would be hard for him to add another room as well? I dunno.
He may or may not ever drop in on this thread.
And its not like Bob is even around much.(which personally suits me fine, cuz when he around the sh*t tends to fly....)
So thats why I keep sticking my big fat nose into stuff on admin., cuz you may or may not get an answer from Bob. I guess he has only so much time.
I think he proly reads...maybe...but not necc replys...
Mebbe you guys can try and start a thread on psych, make it clear what you want the thread to be about....and see what happens?
Chat can be interesting too.
OK, this is nosey muffled moving on...

Anyone else? It's something we could consider if a number of others were interested. But I agree with muffled, too, isn't Psychology a safe place for that already?

Something set up in chat has always interested me..it's nice to talk to someone rather than wait for a post to be answered..there could be a schedule of times and topics..it might take a while to get off the ground..perhaps the more sensitive topics such as self-harm and anorexia could have some restrictions on them to keep lurkers away..there could be a wealth of topics, such as living with bipolar, anxiety disorders, just to name a couple..I know there are lots of websites that have these kinds of topics, but this way babblers may feel more comfortable keeping it in the community..anyone else think it may work?
