How likely do you think it is that he would just abandon this thing that he created and has devoted so much time to over the last several years without a word?
I think it's very unlikely. If he's not coming back, I'm confident he would notify the board. I'm sure he would also do his best to implement some sort of structure he believed would allow the board to continue. So my working rule of thumb about this is that if he doesn't actually come out and say he's leaving and give some kind of final date, he's not leaving. So I'm going with a "no news is good news" approach. I realize that others may view this differently.
I'm just trying to ease what appears to be some unease or anxiety about this, Phillipa. If I'm off-base about what's driving your posts on this topic, feel free to disregard this.
Perhaps part of your question includes *when* is he coming back? I'd sure like to know that. I hope it's sooner rather than later.

I've been waiting for the pic to change. Everyday I check Babble to see if Bob came back. What a pleasant surprise today!
