From what little scuttlebutt I hear, he didn't follow his own advice- seems he made a few enemies.
but my scuttlebutt is fourth hand. Scuttlebutt from the Revolutionary period is a bit threadbare.

Of all of his inventions: bifocals, Franklin stove, glass armonica, lightning rod and odometer, the only one I could do without is the catheter... or was that Foley not Franklin?
