False Assumptions Bob

Correct me if I am wrong, Bob, but it appears that a block is customarily followed by a doubling of the length of the previous block, unless in your judgment the offending poster is especially uncivil, egregiously hurtful towards another poster or repetitively challenging the rules of conduct on PB. In these severe cases you will increase the banishment by triple or more. In the nearly 10 months that I have been on PB, I believe that I have received only one block involving this poster, back in October 2004, when I was still learning the nuances of civility on PB. I think that while opinionated, I am hardly habitually disrespectful of others, grossly challenging of your rules or otherwise a flagrantly uncivil member of this forum. I feel put down and insulted that you evidently think that I am a problem here. I have many characteristics that I would like to change in myself, but I, and those who know me well, do not consider me to be a mean person. Not all uncivil remarks are as obvious as a vulgar word or a direct insult. You have to make judgments about a poster’s intent all the time. I am saying that your assumptions about me are wrong. It is equally if not more harmful for you in your position to unfairly accuse someone of being uncivil as it would be for someone to harm another poster. While I have never maintained an illusory belief of your infallibility, I would have thought by now that you would have developed better judgment about posters’ intentions. Would a simple query of the suspected violator hurt in an attempt to be more fair and accurate? Please offer me an explanation of why you felt that I was so uncivil as to warrant a 3-week block when a simple please rephrase would have been appropriate in this instance. Thank you.

It's more just:

> If the post is uncivil toward a particular individual or group, I may triple it instead.

I don't think you're a problem, I think you add a lot. It's uncivil posts that are a problem. And posts can be uncivil even if that's not the poster's intent.

I wish intent mattered. But it's your courtroom, Bob, and you're the judge of violations of your laws, and clearly you set the punishment based on how you view the evidence and how you feel at the time. I only wish that you would incorporate intent and other mitigating circumstances into your decisions much as our system of justice weighs such factors as pre-meditation, involutary manslaughter, mental competency, excited utterances, and other considerations (I'm not a lawyer) of veracity and intent. I suppose you could be satisfied with an effective system where posters are only infrequently disciplined. I would have you also consider just how free, direct and open posters feel they can be in expressing themselves about both the positive and negative experiences they have on your site.
