I will let you know exactly what the deal is when it happens again, but sometimes if I hit the "back" button in the browser I get the screen with "here's the message you were typing" or something like that, except there's no message.

Well you're supposed to get that screen whenever you don't proceed with (submit or confirm) a post. That includes using the "back" button of your browser. If you want to go back without getting the screen, use the "go back" button on the page under the "submit your revised post" button. The screen won't have a message if there wasn't anything in the message box.
That's how it should work, anyway. The screen business is Javascript, and it may be that Opera does Javascript differently...
