How to preserve white space

Posted by fallsfall on January 27, 2004, at 13:34:32

I want to draw an ascii picture. When I try this any set of 2 or more spaces are replaced by 1 space, so the picture gets all squashed:

``------
``|``````|
``|``````|`````````(where each tic mark is really a space)
``|``````|
``------

comes out like this:

------
| |
| |
| |
------

Is there a way to preserve the white space characters in between the other characters?

Can the font when you are entering a message be the same font that displays messages?

Not that I know of, that's the way HTML works. But maybe ask Slinky? She's the queen of ASCII pictures...

It won't preserve the white space, but you can set the font your browser uses to whatever you like...

The ASCII character #255 is a "non-blank" space. I have used it on the subject line when I wanted more than just one space. I don't how the script would handle this were it in the message body. Maybe the system would crash? :-) (hope not)

Let's see.

1 2  3   4    5     6      7

If you can read this, then Dr. Bob's system hasn't crashed. Woohoo!.

Thank you. I'll try that in the next couple of days. That should work.

But in my Windoze 95, I had to use ALT + 0160.
(ALT+ 255 was _ and 0255 was ÿ.)

How did you figure that one out? Is there a chart somewhere?

My Start Menu® has a thingie¹
        called „¡Character Map!" (© ´95). I found it at
        C:\WINDOWS\CHARMAP.EXE

Bulleted lists are now ½-way possible!
•But I have to type ALT+···  every time.
•No copy-&-paste in the PB post box.
•So, no indented block quotes for me.

¹program? chart? thingie.
