americans with disabilities act

Posted by Brio D Chimp on August 26, 2003, at 17:30:58

How would banning people unfairly be a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act? I'm not saying it isn't,just asking how? I can't see how people have been singled out to be banned because of disability really. It seems to have more to do with the moderator than the moderated. If Bob does have Asperger's syndrome isn't he entitled to protection by that act too? Maybe the remedy would be to provide Bob with some kind of job coach?

Yes I'm all legal. I was just going to renew my ban here but I couldn't resist thinking about just what modifications would you put in place for someone with psychiatric disabilities at an online forum ? At jobs, some of the things I've heard of are clearly outlined duties and procedures, just dealing with one person, a job coach, shorter hours, one on one training..........

What adaptations you could you use here? This board seems like just the opposite. Ill-defined rules,no discussion,no guidance in what is "acceptable" no mediation, just increasing bans.Almost any adaptation would have to involve more coaching or instruction probably but there would have to be clear standards first. Now that I think about it, I'm afraid that a lot of people with significant disabilities MAY NOT be able to use this site! At least not over a long period of time given the new sentencing guidelines and the volatile nature and emotional ups and downs of lots of emotional illnesses.

Hope that doesn't sound insens*tive.

Although a lot of people wouldn't want to be labeled disabled in order to get the special modifications probably. I dislike labeling people anyway. I've seen people labed as being all over the psychological spectrum when they were just openminded gentle sensitive people!

So it probably wouldn't work. But maybe it should!!!

Thank you, Brio. Seriously. I would never think of you as insensitive. Consider how sensitively you just applied a soothing balm to my spirit.

Maybe I'll be able to stop biting my tongue (or is it fingers) now. :)

Re. the board. I've always appreciated that Dr. Bob treated us with the dignity of assuming we were capable of self restraint. I, for one, prefer to be treated that way.

I don't suppose you could put off renewing your ban? Unless of course you find posting here bad for your peace of mind.

I can see your point but I don't think all people always are capable and that's part of the stigma I think. People assume that people have a choice when they don't always. And forcing them to pay such outrageous consequences effectively forces them off the site. A lot of severe MI plays havoc with self restraint. That's not to say that all or even any of the problem posting on this site actually came from disabled posters just that such a case is possible. How would you tell them apart?? I don't know!

It really is for some reason. I put in my "Ban me now Bob" post above. I always feel like I'm walking on eggshells here and that's a bad feeling. Best WisheS Brio

Walking on eggshells with Dr. Bob? To my knowledge, you've never been blocked unless you tried really hard at it. But you should do what's healthiest for you, of course. As much as I miss you.

I think the stigma idea goes both ways. I went to a support site for the spouses of borderline individuals once. And I swear, the behavior on that site was worse than from any identified patients I've ever seen! Sometimes I think everyone's a bit crazy, and we're just the ones who admit it.

When you're blocked, you're not supposed to post, so I'm going to double the duration of your block.
