what if she was just allowed the opportunity to go back and attribute the words specifically to "wise blood" by flannery o'conner?
i'm well acquainted with this work of literature and its conflicted and fractured characters. in that context, i didn't perceive sphinx's comments to be insensitive. i merely heard her quoting the intricate and tortured central character of the work, Hazel Motes.
just weighing in with my opinion, for what it's worth. thanks for hearing me out.

Bob, Bob, Bob.
Sabina's comments are right on the mark. This is not good. Literature is literature. Art is art. Quotes are quotes. AVLS's post was labeled as such.
I must protest this, just because it matters to me. AVLS matters, too, and needs this outlet. It seems a shame you cannot allow her that.
Sincerely,
Wendy

I want to add my support to what Sabina and
Wendy said so well, Blocking someone 4 weeks is unbelievable to me, for someone quoting readily available literature.I also find it insulting that you feel you need to protect us from that.
If you need to go overboard and protect us, how about protecting us from the intimate sexual details of certain overzealous babblers....

FWIW, in the past even posting quotes gets you
blocked if they are uncivil. Not saying I agree
with this, just that this is the existing policy.james

True, I've seen it before its just something
I can't keep quiet about because it makes me far more upset than the so called offensive posts, which seems to defeat the entire purpose. Is there anything I can keep quiet about you may ask? I have exercised self control on perhaps one or two occasions : )

Oh really I was kinda kidding, I mean its just a matter of taste with me, so its not that important, you can't really legislate taste.
And its nothing a few little ** is going to fix.
But thanks.

In reply to Re: blocked for 4 weeks » a very little sphinx, posted by Dr. Bob on July 27, 2003, at 23:02:57Dr. Bob,
Sigh. Even with the author quoted and the subject not out of context our sweet little sphinx gets another time out for her esoteric knowledge. (I guess Flannery isn't that esoteric...seems she is taught in a majority of universities now.)
Sphinx wasn't suggesting anyone was wrong. She was expressing a quote from a famous author that described how she was feeling when she posted it.
To show so little sensitivity for Sphinx's feelings is quite confusing Dr. Bob. I thought that everyone on these boards had a right to feel safe and have you be the ultimate daddy figure to sweep in and clean up any frays that occur. Instead there are a mixture of folks here that are of different backgrounds, differing levels of mental illness, and different ideologies which means that we cannot please everyone NOR can we protect everyone.
Are we still working under the Dr. Bob premise of I'd rather have fewer people helped than more people hurt/offended? Hmmmmm.
