Hi Dr B :o)
Well, we're now a 2 pc family!! *lol* A friend ahs lent me a laptop for 6 months, so we've networked up so both are online.
But, I don't always use the same pc, I switch between the two... So that means that the cookie thats supplies the info for the New Indicators is always wrong!!
Is there anyway we could "log in" and the site owuld then recognise new messages based on our log in instead of a cookie?? I know others must have similar problems when using pc's in a net cafe or library...
I can just never remember what I have and haven't read!!

Hmm, I've run into that, too. But I actually like not having to log in...
What if it kept working this way, but there were new optional ways to log out (to save your cookies) and log in (to restore them)?

I'm not quite sure what you mean.. surely if I chose not to save the cookie, I would get new indicators on every message every time??
Maybe I just need a better memory!!

Yeah, saving my cookie on your server would be ideal.. but.. how would that cookie know its me without me logging in and telling it that...
Does that makes sense??

I'm truly fascinated at how this works because I've cleared cookies, caches, and even wiped my drive here but to this day and only on PBA does this message greet me each and every time I open PBA: Last visit: 09/17/2002 21:47:20
Seems to me that was around the date of the first time I was blocked. Interesting. I'm no novice when it comes to cookie management so let's hear how your suggestion would work?

I'd use it because I sometimes sign on only for a minute to check something specific and would like to preserve the new indicators for later when I have more time. Of course later often doesn't come so this just encourages procrastination. And of course, I can get the same effect by either refusing the cookie or resetting the system time. Something like the "restore last login time" you propose would be more useful I'm sure.

Dr. Bob,Still wondering why only on PBA are my new indicators ALWAYS on? I've done ever cookie wipe and fiddled with both browsers so it isn't something to do with this machine. I don't have this problem on any of the other boards: PSB, PB, PPB, PBF, PBBC.
The main part of my question was regarding why the new indicators on your server only recognized my last visit to PBA as 9/17/02 at 21:47:20?
Only on the admin board and only since my first block. Coincidence? Or a way of keeping track of blocks?
Please enlighten the masses as to what cookie tricks can be done to undo these god awful yellow tags that WILL NOT GO AWAY on my PBA.

Weird, you must not really be getting rid of your cookies, since that's where that last visit information is stored. You can see all the cookies you have from this site, BTW, with:
http://www.dr-bob.org/cgi-bin/pb/cookies.pl
Also, did you try:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#cleanup
> Only on the admin board and only since my first block. Coincidence? Or a way of keeping track of blocks?
Blocking is by posting name. It wouldn't work to use cookies since people could just turn them off...

> BobDr. Bob,
After wiping every cookie off of every browser and restarting the machine this is what I get ONLY when I visit PBA: Last visit: 12/31/1969 16:00:00
After turning cookies back on it returns to the 09/17/2002 21:47:20 as my last visit. Not a single other Babble site has this problem. Just the admin. I'm quite baffled by this.
I have gone through the help prompts in your FAQ as well as wiped my drive so it isn't a problem on this end with my OS or browser settings.
Any ideas?

We're now a 2 pc family here Dr Bob, and the really annoying thing will be the cookies here.. if I switch between machines (which is likely) I will always be getting new indicators on messages I've already read.. Is there anyway to have this attached to login, so that those of us who use more than 1 pc don't have to try and memorise what messages we have and haven't read..
I know this was bought up briefly before, but I can't remember what came of it, if anything

Would you mind going to that page each time? I'm afraid it might be confusing for lots of people...
