to require folks to introduce themselves when they first start to post, and yet not make it too intrusive? I ask this of all babblers, not just Dr. B.
it throws me off when a new name appears and seems to be up to date but i have no idea where they came from. i tried to introduce myself clearly and perhaps this is an idiosyncracy (sp?) of mine.

Dr. B--
So is civility a request or requirement? I am sincere with this question. No flippant tone intended.

I do appreciate what you say- I find I regularly get 'lost' these days with the changing names and messages.
If this was a face-to-face support group, I would agree that it would be appropriate to ask people to introduce themselves just a little (maybe just their name and why they have come/what they hope to get from being there). But I think the mixture of the Boards being completely public and also messages being so short would make that all too scarey. Particularly if someone starts posting when they are upset and just posting at all seems a huge risk.
The idea of profiles comes up regularly (my latest low tech idea was to do it as another list of bookmarks, till anything more hi tech worked out). But its likely that those wanting to do that would only be people who had used the Boards a bit and felt safe doing so, and also knew that they would use the Boards enough that it was worth their time putting a profile together.
