Dr. Bob: questions 4 U!

Posted by Janelle on April 1, 2002, at 3:27:58

Just wondering:

1. What exactly do you do @ the U of Chicago? I ask because it appears that you spend A LOT of time on these boards, so I'm just curious what your position is at the school - do you teach psychiatry/psychology, are you a researcher, or what?

2. How do you get funding for these wonderful boards - I don't see any ads on them, and none of those pesky pop-up ads, so I got to thinking (which can be dangerous!) gee, how does he afford to keep these boards up and running?

Thanks, the curious one!

Mostly, I work at Student Counseling. It's taking care of patients more than teaching or doing research.

Mostly, I pay for it myself. If you want, you can make a donation:

There's a lot of discussion about funding in the PBA archives. Do you miss the ads? :-)

Maybe We Could Have Psych Med Ads? » Dr. Bob

Those pharmaceutical companies have HUGE marketing budgets, and here at PSB we have a concentrated grouping of their core customer base...ooohhh, the entrepreneurial spirit in me is tingling!

It could stimulate threads about particular meds, and it would also raise awareness of the marketing component of psych meds, one of my pet causes. Drug companies could also post links in their ads to websites with more technical information.

With the kind of marketing budgets they have, Dr. Bob could have a Porsche! Dr. Bob, do you want a Porsche? (Maybe you already have one - do you want two?) <grin>

This idea is kinda tongue in cheek, but really, they have big ca$h, and if you need money to keep things going, or to make things better, it might be something to consider. In the meantime, I'll donate some funds.

Thanks for asking my questions, Dr. Bob. I appreciate it. I wish I could donate to your very worthy cause, but unfortunately, due to my illness among other things (long story, not worth getting into) I am out of work and literally broke.

Also, you asked if I miss the ads - were you joking or were there really ads on these boards at one time? (I'm relatively new here!)

Well, maybe they don't need to preach to the converted? And other issues might include (1) restrictions on their promotion of "off label" uses and (2) so many posts being complaints about medication.

Hey, thanks! :-)

No problem, I understand, no one is under any obligation to offer any support.

I was kidding. :-)

Dr Bob: Well, maybe they don't need to preach to the converted?

fachad: The existence Armies of Detail Men tells me they believe otherwise.

Dr. Bob: And other issues might include (1) restrictions on their promotion of "off label" uses

fachad: Doesn’t the FDA already regulate that anyway?

Dr. Bob: (2) so many posts being complaints about medication

fachad: Perfect! That provides valuable reconnaissance info on their competitor’s products. Knowing what side effects patients hate the most helps them know how to "spin" their own drugs’ side effects profile to look favorable in comparison. You should definitely charge extra $$ for that!

P.S. Did you realize that Medscape's "Psychopharmacology Today" column, featuring Dr. Kramer, is sponsored by Lilly?

I know that most of the finest things in the world are "labor of love" type projects, but I *really hate* to think about you being out of pocket for Psycho-Babble.

Right, concern about the FDA might make them think twice about supporting a site that supports those uses.

Right, but they don't need to support it to get that benefit out of it.

I didn't. Does it say that somewhere?

Yes, it alternates in the pop up ad that is along the top right corner.

It will say, "Depression Resource Center is Supported by Lilly".

1. What page is the ad on? I haven't seen it on the page I linked to...

2. Accepting advertising from someone is being "sponsored" by them? I suppose it is, in a way, but...

3. Is this Depression Resource Center the same thing as Psychopharmacology Today?
