Who is Dr.Bobb??? Dr. Bob, ATTN please

Posted by sid on March 10, 2002, at 10:30:51

This Dr. Bobb is blocking me for 1 week while I was not uncivil AT ALL. And, he tells me he asked me to be civil once before, and that's not true either. See his message:

Some people have too much time on their hands.

Sid,

Either something weird is going on with this board or someone's messing around because people are getting blocked who absolutely did nothing wrong, including you. I thought that maybe I had misread certain messages but these folks have been perfectly fine.

Gosh, I hope I am right because if I am wrong, then this isn't the board I thought it was.

Misty

PS - I hope this message doesn't get me blocked:))

Someone is messing around because I just noticed the double (b) on Bobb. Yeah, very funny.

Nikki,

Initially, I didn't think it was very funny. But I have to admit I laughed at the posts that said that people are blocked on Fridays and Holidays. Sorry, Dr. Bob, but I laughed the hardest at the one that banned you for life.

In all seriousness, I know it's not funny but I have a sick sense of humor myself so that's why I relate to it. Anyway, I admit that at times, I have felt that Dr. Bob seems to be way too strict. But I would rather because of the type of board this is that if he is going to be extreme, it be in the direction of being too strict instead of being too lax.

Still, I think the poster on psychobabble had a good idea when she said that if someone is blocked, there should be an appeal process because sometimes it may really be unfair to block that person. On one of the email lists I belong to, our moderator is very strict about not flaming people but she doesn't get on you for one post like Dr. Bob seems to. She realizes people can have bad days but if she sees a pattern, you will definately hear from her. But again, maybe because of the type of board this is, very strict policies are called for and I can definately appreciate that.

Yes, I noticed the spelling. It's somewhat funny, but somewhat not. Blocking Dr.Bob in retaliation to one having been blocked can be funny; messing with everybody on this board is not so funny. I certainly could do without the "white noise..." There's enought things as is that I read and decide is not for me, I don't have time to waste reading practical jokes that are funny once, but are already lame the second time you read them. Frankly, PB has less and less appeal to me each day. Stuff like that certainly doesn't help.

Sid,

I hear what you're saying but do you know of any boards like this one that don't have problems? I don't of any and at least Dr. Bob does his best to take care of problems as soon as he finds out.
Anyway, I am always looking for alternatives just as a change of pace so if you have any recommendations, I would be most grateful.

That's one issue. Also, I think I've needed to become more strict as the board's become more active. As things happen faster, things go wrong faster. It's like driving a car, the faster you go, the quicker you have to react.

I don't block people for one post, I always (well, almost always) first ask them to please be civil.

People are free to post appeals here or, if they've already been blocked, to email me. And others are free to voice their opinions either way...

Ah, but Dr Bob isn't a mere moderator or the like.. this is HIS website, his work, his baby... Dr Bob is god!!!

People do seem to forget that without him we wouldn;t have what we DO have...

I get very defensive of this.. I know what an amazing influence and help this place has been to me, and thus, so has Dr Bob... He gets a really harsh deal if you ask me.. everyone is quick to critisize him, but how often does anyone say thanks eh?

Dr. Bob,
actually I have nothing against you, rather I am somewhat angry at "Dr. Bobb" for abusing his/her posting privileges. I know you can't be everywhere at once, it just seems to me that we (posters) all have responsibilities when we decide to post and I hate to see someone behave like this. This web site is a common good and as such, unless we all take care of it, it can easily turn into a mess. It seems to me that we must take it seriously enough to respect it and other posters. But that's just me.

As far as the site being less appealing, well, I'm at a "different place" (I can't stand people talking like that, but that's the easiest way to put it) than I was a few months ago. It has to do with me changing, not the site. I'm doing much better and the site is mostly for people who are in the middle of depression or other mental illnesses. I may find it more appealing later on if my dysthymia comes back, but lately, I have found it less appealing. The way I see it, that's a good thing.

Hi, actually, my criticisms were not directed at Dr.Bob but rather at Dr.Bobb (the trouble maker). This is the only board I've been on, so I can't compare it to any other. I'm not much of an internet fan, I generally have to use it some for my work, but apart from that, I don't use it much. I have no recommendation, sorry. Other than going outside to play that is! Or to the museum to see art. Etc.

Yes, I thought so. But I did not want to get involved to the point of naming names. Plus, what if it were someone else? Like the evil twin of Dr.Bob? ;-)

I agree with Nikki. I don't find that Dr.Bob has been over-blocking people. And I agree that this is his website, so in the end, he can pretty much do what he wants with it. I know the division of the pages (PB, PSB,etc...) is not what I wish it were, but he wants it that way, so be it.

And this web site has helped me a great deal even if these days I find it less useful. I still like to read things and respond from time to time. In future potential times of crisis, I suspect I'll come back and be more active on this board because it does help me.

Very good point Nikki and I apologize if my post came across as being critical as I didn't mean for it to be. I definately understand that Dr. Bob is the boss of this website but the moderator I referred to created that email list when there wasn't one like it and it's done as much for me as psychobabble has so that's why in my mind, it was a valid comparison. Anyway, while I expressed the opinion that Dr. Bob occassionally seems to be very quick about warning and blocking people, I definately understand his reasons and feel that overall he does a great job and is providing a great service.

Since I am taking St. Johns Wort which apparently can cause side effects from sun exposure, I am waiting to get sunglasses before I do that. Cataracts run in my family so that's why I am paranoid.

But you're right, there is more to life than just being on these boards. I am in the midst of a bad PMS attack so that's why I am spending alot of time here today.

However, soon I'll be watching the television to make sure my favorite college team, Maryland, gets the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament. It's not as sophisticated as visiting an art museum, which I do like by the way but at least, it will get me away from the computer. Gosh, I never thought I'd see the day where I would need the television to get me away from doing something else:))

Anyway Sid, your point is well taken.

Yes, S. is being majorly inappropriate and has probably gotten his butt banned forever. I don't know him--but my crackups weren't famous for being appropriate either.

Just a thought,
