English spell check? Dr. Bob

Posted by sid on February 18, 2002, at 13:00:56

Dr. Bob,
I really like the new features of the posting windows. One thing I've realized though, that could perhaps lead to more improvements...
I usually need to go back and revise because of typos in my messages. My question is, would it be possible to include an English spell check before we submit? I think we could avoid many revisions that way.

Keep in mind I'm not a computer-Internet buff, and I have NO IDEA whether this is even doable. The only web site where I post messages is this one, my Internet experience is very limited, and I don't have my own professional web site yet because I have not found the time (or the interest?) to learn how to do it. My suggesiton may not pass the experts' laugh-test, so let's call it an item on my wish-list.

Possible, yes. I've actually seen boards with that feature. But I think it would be a *major* project to implement! So don't hold your breath. But thanks for thinking of ideas! :-)

Sid,
If using spell check is important you can use the spell check attached to whatever word processor you have. Just cut all of the text out of the reply window, paste it into a blank word processing document, run spell check and then cut and paste it back into the original window. It sounds like far more work than it really is. I do something similar already because I can't stand the small composing window.

Of course it might be better if we all reviewed our posts as often as you.

Yes, I thought of that... but I'm lazy I guess.
I should do that b/c I leave typos - I don't always read what I wrote before confirming. Lazy again! Or I would rather do something else... :-)

Would this spell-check work for your site?

Thanks for the suggestion, but being a creature of habit, I'd rather not have to deal with PHP...

Ummm, do you need to make an appointment for that, Dr. Bob? How does that make you feel? hmmmm...Do you consider this to be a good habit?...I see.... Do we need to make a med change?...Oh really?....

Well, all of this stems from your childhood. You are exhibiting what we in the profession call "repetition compulsion", along with an extreme case of transference to those-..allow me to look at my notes,,,,ahh, yes, you call them 'Babblers'?...oh, but look at the time. We're gonna have to stop now. I'm sorry, but we'll have to pick this up next week. Just stop at the reception desk on your way out for your next appointment....oh and about payment....

I'm sure there are several pre-written spell-checks in perl (I'm sure it would be pretty easy to roll your own spell(1) interface, too). One concern would be the (cpu, real) time it would take to process each post.

Another idea would be to implement a "commonly misspelled words" check. You could check each post and put the questionable words in boldface or something similar.

Just an idea,
Chris
