Psycho-babble getting out of control???

Posted by jay on February 10, 2002, at 5:51:16

I am a pretty easy-going guy, but I am really concerned with the nature of some of the posts on psycho-babble. People are getting very uncivil, and just being plain rude to each other. I enjoy the chit-chat on psycho-social, but many people come in a crisis situation to psycho-babble, and see this is turning into one of those unmoderated Usenet newsgroups.

I understand people having bad days, but this is getting pretty nasty. Just my concern for sensitivity and quality. This place, overall, is generally a nice and supportive environment, especially for people put off by many other places on the internet.

Jay,
Wasn't it just that one thread? Do you have any others in mind? I haven't noticed any other problems that haven't been addressed by Dr. Bob. I find that PB is a safe environment in general thanks to Dr. Bob. And even Dr. Bob is entitled to some time off.

Yes, you are right, it is only a few posts. It just get's a bit disheartening, and I am far from being any type of "angel", but I would hope we could police ourselves. We don't have many other places to turn to.

Honestly,
Jay

I personally believe your concerns are unfounded and over stated, however your entitled to your thoughts and opinions so I can't say anything else about it.

Right, in general, the more specific you are, the easier it is for me to look into something. Also, feel free to email me to let me know if there's a problem, I might see that first (but might not, either...).

Actually, I was working on the new posting system... :-)

Well Jay, after reading the posts again today, I am beginning to think there is more to what you say than I had realized. A lot of yelling going on and the tone is a bit strident. I guess boards have cycles just like we do. :) Why don't you join us at PSB for a while.

Never mind my post. I must be in a bad mood. (nm) » Dinah

One thing I've noticed in posts where people start getting upset & making accusations is the inability to read the posting carefully.

One I remember stated that he'd rather not take a med if it caused sexual dysfunction & that SSRIs essentially left him feeling 'flat'. Another took that to mean his depression wasn't that bad & said so. That may even be true but it's not what the original poster said. He was trying to say that if SSRIs aren't effective enough but instead do cause worrisome side-effects for him, he'd rather not take them.

There's quite a few more in the same vein. Not everyone can express themself in a lucid manner & we need to be careful not to read more into it than they mean & not to automatically jump to conclusions about their meaning. Give them the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming guilt.

To assume we know what's going on in someone else's head isn't a good idea. And to believe that our pain outweighs their pain is equally bad. Sometimes I want to step in & saying something concillatory to both parties, but I'm not always feeling energetic enough to type out a carefully worded message. Too often, egos take over in a mini-battle to see who wins - we're supposed to be here to help & support each other...

Will do..We all have cruddy days..thanks..:-) (nm) » Dinah
