Banned for language?

Posted by Krazy Kat on November 29, 2001, at 18:07:36

Dr. Bob:

I don't understand why geno was banned for using the word "fuck". He/she did not use it towards anyone, just as an exclamation. What makes that unacceptable, and something like "damn" O.K.? "Goddamnit" would certainly offend some. (Didn't mean to list a string of obscenitites here - just trying to make a point).

Is there something on your site about which words are "appropriate" and which aren't?

I have to say, this bothers me a lot. It will definitely limit the type of people who come here, and I don't think that's good.

Krazy Kat --

You and I are on a different wave length today. geno has used the "f" word in several posts, sometimes to the extreme -- and been warned. Yes, today was just once, but I think Dr. Bob was responding to the prior warning/cumulative effect.

On a different note -- I do think there is a place for some choice language, now and then. But sometimes posts, and certain posters, cross the line. Excessive use of foul language will run off as many, if not more, people than Dr. Bob's request that it be toned down. Plus, in certain circles (mine, for instance), excessive use of foul language and use of certain words (like the "f" word), is not civil.

I don't jump into these conflicts very often -- but, I wanted to support Dr. Bob on his decision here. I think geno needed to be warned for his use of the "f" word and because he chose to continue to use that word, I think his ban was appropriate. Thank you Dr. Bob.

Well quite often things from this board I can relate to in the real world. My six year old son quite smoothly said "shit" in a sentence. I told him I hear that again I'll take a priviledge away for four days. His reply was that it wouldn't be fair because he didn't know it was a "f" word. Well now you know son!

Krazy Kat I agree with you. (nm)

akc:

I really think the rules of the "vehicle" should apply here, not Dr. Bob's. If we get to the point of having sites rated, which I'm actually not against, then that's fine. Right now the internet is a very open place re: language, etc. We as a group could "condemn" geno's language and perhaps influence him/her. But this is inappropriate censorship. Again, from what I saw, no one was attacked. It's just a word.

Oh, ha, ha, ha.... how Do you handle that? :) (nm) » Willow

Why not use "spoilers" perhaps, instead of using the entire word, use the * for vowels or something of that nature. Or, in the headers give a warning. Then, those who are offended, have the option of not reading them.

i learned that "hate" is a four-letter word...not "fuck."

i'm surprised that i haven't been banned yet. i tend to have a bit of a sailor-mouth, but it's only when i mean it deeply, i don't use those words superfulously.

i believe that the notion of "bad" words is rather puritanical and antiquated.

btw--i used the word "fuck" in an essay i wrote for an upper-division English lit class, and received an A. i was the top pupil. of course, i used the word appropriately.

i have not been reading geno's messages (well, not too many of them) but i feel that banning him would be biased.

a small number of us use choice words on occasion and *i* personally don't understand what is wrong with that.

respectfully,
sar

I f**king agree with you. ;) (nm) » sar
