Some sad f*ck has obviously trawled through the posts for my addr.) from an anonymous hotmail a/c, entitled "Best Advice Ever". Inside I'm told that all I have to do to transform my life is visit O'Conner's 'Undoing Depression' site.

james here....

I would like to hear what Dr Bob says about this issue as it appears O'Conner or assistants are getting e-mail addresses from this site.

Since I've done my 'Please be civil' warning-which I don't dispute, & expected-on this one (tho' it would appear that the '2 strikes & you're out' rule does not apply to everyone...), I too would be interested. The e-mail had a 'template' look to it, as though it was std issue. It didn't address me personally.

I would also (sincerely) be interested in the protocol for addressing individuals who deliberately set out to *provoke* (my views on psychotherapy have been set out v. clearly on this board), by means of private intrusion, using info gleaned from this board.

I think maybe there's a fine line btwn civility (which I understand the need for) & submissiveness (not a trait to be encouraged in depressives etc)....

J.

If you feel intruded upon by a company, one option might be to file a complaint. It may just apply to US companies, but the Better Business Bureau has an Online Complaint System:

If you receive an abusive email yourself after posting something here, please forward it directly to me (with all its headers, if you know how to do that). FWIW, I can then block any Psycho-Babble or associated Yahoo Group registrations using that email address.

You have a point there. But there can also be a fine line between assertiveness and hostility...

That won't be necessary, thanks. The storm has blown itself out!

The e-mail wasn't abusive in any way. Just provocative, given my views (as wld be, say, sending Christian literature to a Muslim, & I know how sacred you hold religiosity ;-) ). Maybe I'll e-mail you the e-mail addr.

Of course there is & I think you & I both know I crossed the line intentionally. It was worth blowing my 'Please be civil' warning on (cynical, I know)! The organisation in question held their product up for review & I duly obliged. I used yr board to deliver my appraisal since it was through this that it contacted me.

Won't happen again tho', especially given the downright nastiness of one particular poster on a couple of rapidly-becoming-notorious threads on Babble. Demonstrates how untethered hostility can be destabilizing (yr prime concern I guess) & corrosive.

Surprisingly, given how ill I am @ present, I've felt disinclined to visit here the past few days. I'm sick of individuals (be they anti-opiate or oitherwise) generalizing their personal experiences for all people, & getting away with it by (in my eyes) manipulating the 'Civility' laws.

Just some feedback,
J.
