If you think any of these statements are true, please vote at Psycho-Babble-Open.
After the poll closes, we can discuss them. Please vote and voice your input everyone :-)
1. People who suffers from insomnia for one year or more is at a risk for psychiatric disorders.
2. Fluoxetine is a MAOI.
3. Informed consent should never be granted to patients with psychiatric disorders.
4. In terms of the [length] of depressive/maniac episodes, BPII is more severe than BPI.
5. In the U.S. more people die by suicide than by homicide.
6. Autism, OCD, MDD, SZ all have genetic basis.
7. "Atypical" meds causes more extrapyramidal side effects, and are less specific than "typical" meds.
8. Sometimes a minor event such as a poor test grade can push an otherwise normal person to commit suicide.
9. Lithium, Valproate,m and Tamoxifen are mood stabilizers.
10. We are very grateful to Dr. Bob for providing us with the PB site [considering he is paying $275/month to host it].
Please vote, then we can have some fun.

Zippy,
If you truly would like to encourage people to participate in your poll, you might more likely do so by providing more context. eg. - the difference between BPI and II; what MDD and SZ are shorthand for; defining atypical vs typical meds. and what you mean by extrapyramidal, etc....
Given that you are attempting to facilitate some discussion here you might improve the odds of that by noting that facilitation means 'to ease' and you don't do that by using scientific jargon which may be clear to you but likely is NOT to most on this board, who seem to be your intended audience.
Kinda hard to communicate when you are writing in an obscure dialect which may make perfect sense to you (given your immersion into (studies) med. babble and aspirations to be a therapist) and little to those who don't share your passion and it's unique tweaks to language.

I was not going to say anything but this poll seems just a test of knowlage. The questions cannot be answered by ones opinion or repersent ones condition as they all have a specific answer, or only one correct answer. Rzip, what is the reason for this poll/test ?pat

More definition would have made some of the questions easier to answer. I just skipped over ones I wasn't sure of or guessed.
"The questions cannot be answered by ones opinion or repersent ones condition "
Could we all add questions we would like input on or an opinion?
"Rzip, what is the reason for this poll/test ?"
In my opinion it is a good start for opening up dialogues and discussion. The more input we have probably the better the more interesting the topics will be.
Just one of my many opinions,
Willow

Pat,
> Rzip, what is the reason for this poll/test ?
Two main reasons:1) To add flavor/variety to PB site. Just trying something new and familiar to me.
I am a student, so I am used to test questions. So, it is the way that I feel comfortable in interacting with others. I mean I have to force myself to share my feelings (reveal myself as Shar puts it). However, to interact on a poll and to raise discussions afterward is familiar and comfortable to me. So, I thought that I would give this a try.2) To provide/contribute information. I was planning to cite sources along with the explanation of the statements (True or false)--in case, some of you were interested in the info., but doubt the validity of the statements.
I guess you are worried that I am going to post the stats of who knows what and stuff. The answer is NO. I am only planning to gather the poll stats as a satisfication for myself that someone actually voted at my poll :-) And then, I was just going to explain each statements and let the discussions take a life of their own. The poll is just for my own pleasure, in terms of interactions/feedbacks. I mean I still plan to post the explanations as a thread for whoever is interested. And of course, I am not going to mention anything about who voted what and to what degree and those sort of stat stuff. If there is one statement that is of statistical interest (like a majority of those who voted believe a certain myth to be true), I'll mention that as a highlight point. The bottom-line is that your contributions will be blind to the public.Does that answer your concerns?
I did it as a poll because it is more interactive than to merely start a thread on each of the statements. Like I said before, the thing that I treasure the most from PB is the on-line exchanges. I love feedbacks. Unfortunately, I do not have much free time to carry on the amount of back and forth e-mail exchanges that I would like to have. Besides, I tend to get obsessed with this if I am not careful because I like the safe/invisible interactions so much.
And I guess this poll idea is a mixture of revealing myself (the safe academic way, mixed with the "unsafe" personally revealing way).
Thanks for posting, and thereby giving me a chance to reply and address you concerns. I am just trying this and see whether it works for all of US (*Shar*). I said "us". :-)

DJ,
> If you truly would like to encourage people to participate in your poll, you might more likely do so by providing more context. eg. - the difference between BPI and II; what MDD and SZ are shorthand for; defining atypical vs typical meds. and what you mean by extrapyramidal, etc....
I'll try to define the terms, without giving the answers away. In my reply to Pat, I already explained that this is a game (like a crossword puzzle fun activity). My wish is that we will are enjoy this tangent/variety to the PB site. Something new. Pat123 has made me realized the reason behind the reluctance people have in voting at the poll. I guess some of you are worried that I will reveal the stats (who voted what, in what way, ...). The obvious answer to that is NO. The poll is just a way to draw you guys to be more interactive with me. But, I am not going to reveal anything personal about you guys. I mean the blindness to this site is what makes it so special.
O.K.
1) Bipolar I and II are the two categories of the disease (also known as Maniac-Depressive Disorder). BP I and BP II differs in the amount of depressive vs. maniac episodes as well as the duration of each episode.
2) OCD = Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder; MDD = Maniac-Depressive Disorder; SZ = Schizophrenia
3) The "typical" vs. "atypical" terms refer to the older, conventional antipsychotics (tranquilizer) vs. the newer antipsychotics (e.g. SSRI). Is the conventional antipsychotics "typical" or "atypical" meds?
4) Extrapyramidal refers to the brain neural region that is more associated with motor neurons. So, the older, conventional meds targets motor neurons and therefore the patients suffer extrapyramidal effects such as heart irregularities, and exhibit zombie-like symptoms. The older "antipsychotics" were NOT meds for helping the patient to get better, rather they sedate the patients like those in the "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest". The newer meds are the SSRI, MAOI, specific antipsychotics drugs that target specific brain systems. They are the real meds for TREATing patients with psychiatric illnesses.I hope that clarifies the poll.
I did not think the questions were too jargoned because the PB meds are full of the short-hands and jargons. So, I assumed that the terms were familiar to most of the participants. I don't think they are too scientific since these (IMO) are the kind of issues that get dealt with across the PB boards, in the forms of the scientific jargon. But, I probably misjudged? I am not sure--just e-mail me your questions, and I clarify them :-)
Thanks,
Rzip

Willow,
Your response on Psycho-Social-Babble just made me realize that people do not have to go to PB-Open to vote at all.
Everyone, just respond here like the way Willow did. You can just respond directly to the poll questions on the PB boards here. It is the participation that makes it fun and relevant for the discussion(s) to follow.
> Could we all add questions we would like input on or an opinion?
Please hold off discussions till Monday, so that people can have some fun with this activity first. On Monday, I hope the discussion on this thread will be jamming (but that might just be my fantasy).
Thanks,
Rzip

That was never a concern of mine, RZip. Nothing personal or embarrassing could be revealed in true false questions, other than one's lack of knowledge of the issues, which was not a concern of mine either. Given that you are encouraging people to post there answers here, now it seems you've changed your thinking on that though it seems to me that the graphing and percentages functions at egroups allow you to more easily sum up the totals, even though they don't prove much other than PB folks knowledge level on your choic of issues for discussion.
Like pat123 I was curious about your motivation and I was also curious about the fact that some of the terminology you used was obscure, even for this board and many of its users though obviously some recognized or guessed about the terms. However you've explained both here now so thanks for that.
No further questions from me at this time and if I did have any I could not e-mail you as you suggested because your e-mail is not listed here, though it is listed on the egroup board so perhaps that was what you were alluding to, as to the source.
Cheers!
