If only there was a formula for feeling well

Posted by denise1904 on May 23, 2022, at 11:41:15

Without medication I would say that I'm high functioning but inside I feel:-

Overwhelmed by a sense of morbidness and constantly thinking about death.
Concept of time changes, I don't look forward to anything so I lose sense of what day it is or even what month it is.
My joints feel sore, like they are burning
I feel empty and spaced out
Feeling lonely but not wanting to talk to anyone
Nauseas
Like everything is one big act.
My spine feels rigid
I don't want to die but it seems like the only way to stop feeling like this.
Attacks of anxiety for no reason at all
Sleeping through the night but waking up feeling like I've had no sleep at all

All of the above in spite of the fact that I have been playing tennis regularly, walking loads
I fall asleep with less than 5HTZ Delta binaural beats playing
I listen to things that make me laugh
I go to work and try to keep busy
I socialise (although wanting to do that
I do all the deep breathing stuff from my diaphragm
I've tried loads of supplements, even had magnesium injections years ago.

It's just so frustrating and it annoys me when you see all these things on the internet, advocating all of the above. I do it with zero results!

When I was ok and happy (up until the age of 35) I hardly did anything to try and make myself feel better and yet I felt great. Now I work so hard at it with zero results!

I'm so grateful for medication but lately SSRIs have been making me feel incredibly drowsy that don't even feel that they work that well.

Depression and anxiety is such a frustrating illness as we are all told that we exercise, eat sensibly, do yoga, meditate, think positive thoughts, breath deeply, stay connected with others, try new things, etc etc we will be ok. I know these things help others so I don't get why they don't help me!

Hi, Denise.

Just a reminder:

Unfortunately, "depression" is one word that is attached to many phenomena - psychological, biological, and a combination of both. I think this is why the stigma has been so hard to erase. The depression that comes with the loss of a spouse is usually associated with grieving. More often than not, it is self-limiting. One could describe this as a healthy psychological reaction to loss, but must still be processed. For some people, the depression seems to continue and get worse. Time is not a sufficient treatment. Grieving places stress on the brain for everyone. However, the brains of some people are vulnerable to becoming dysregulated when they are stressed too much. Once triggered, a depressive state can continue in the absence of further psychological stress. It becomes self-perpetuating. The thermostats in the brain that keep systems in balance are no longer synchronized. Sometimes, a system can reset its thermostats to return to its original balance spontaneously. For the less fortunate, the various brain circuits are less likely to rediscover their natural equilibriums. Without some sort of biological intervention, the depressive state can continue unabated for years, or even indefinitely.

Depression is indeed a very real psychobiological illness. It leaves one in an altered state of consciousness from which no amount of psychotherapy can change. There is no character weakness. However, there is a brain that is not operating as designed.

Does that make sense to you?

That really is weird. The things you mention help me heaps. Maybe you are lacking some nutrients that your brain needs to feel ok.

I wouldn't stop these good habits though. You are just lacking some pieces of the puzzle. You already got your behavior in check, so don't disassemble the pieces you already have.

I don't know who you were directing your comments to. However, your advice is excellent, Lamdage.

Denise:

The best example I know of for why you should consider continuing to live and keep trying is me.

After adding Nardil to my regime over a year ago, I am finally responding to treatment and feel monumentally better.

A depressive state came over me paroxysmally one day in 1976. I fell to the bottom of the abyss within an hour while attending a chemistry class. In fact, I have a photo of me sitting in the same room with the same people. However, my smile indicates that the picture was taken before I became ill.

2021 - 1976 = 45 years

45 years = 16,425 days

That's a lot of days to live in a painful and vegetative altered state of consciousness.

I have begun to use the phrase, "altered state of consciousness" to describe mental illness. Historically, this phrase has been reserved to describe how one experiences the effects of hallucinogens
like LSD or psilocybin. If the consciousness that someone is trapped in while depressed, manic, or psychotic can't be considered altered, then how else shall we characterize them?

For Denise... but I would recommend that to anyone. Its hard to get healthy without behaving in healthy ways.
