Lamictal and Folic Acid

Posted by PCB on September 2, 2019, at 9:23:18

Hey Everyone!

PeterMartin brought up a great point about the CEQUEL trial (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(15)00450-2/fulltext). It noted bipolar patients who received a folic acid supplement appeared to reverse the antidepressant effect of Lamictal.

I have notice over the pass few years if I eat to many vegetables, I feel depressed the next day. When I saw this study, I wondered if the folate in the vegetables reversed Lamictal's antidepressant effect. I actually emailed some of the psychiatrists in the CEQUEL trial and asked a few psychiatrists about this. They felt that it was the folic acid in OTC vitamins that cause the reversal of Lamictal, not folate found in foods. They said they had not seen an patients who ate lots of vegatables have there Lamictal antidepressant effect reversed.

Has anyone noticed folic acid, B complex or multivitamin (all with folic acid) reversed their Lamictal? Anyone noticed vegetables reverse their Lamictal? Thanks everyone!

Yeah, it's kind of strange since folic acid has been shown to augment lithium. It could be an interaction with the ability of lamotrigine to inhibit sodium channels.

But, I would tend to agree that folate intake from foods probably results in lower serum folate and is probably absorbed a bit more slowly.

However, you could try to isolate certain foods to see. It may be a separate reaction allergy (although I'm not really up on food reactions / sensitivities).

Folic Acid and methyl folate are different. I don't know if I still have the study but it indicates that Deplin does not interfere whereas straight folic acid supplements would Sorry I don't remember the mechanism

"Mandatory fortification with folic acid
USA has had mandatory fortification of all cereal/grain flours with folic acid since 1998.
Canada white flour and pasta has been mandatorily fortified since 1998.
Chile introduced mandatory fortification of flour in 2000.
Australia introduced mandatory fortification of bread-making flour in late 2009."

Is this something that would be of concern?
