Hey babble friends,
a peer is taking Maprotilin and he says it does not influence his sex life at all. Might this be an option for me? Does it not cause anorgasmia? Does it prolong QT Interval?
Thanks

Hi,
It is primarily a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, like nortriptyline or desipramine.
It probably feels more like nortriptyline, owing to its 5-ht2a and antihistamine effects.
The sexual side effects would probably be less than with SSRIs.
As far as cardiac effects, because it is a NRI, it could increase heart rate and/or blood pressure. From some google searching, it appears that QTc prolongation can be a side effect.
I'm not sure if you've tried nortriptyline. These two would likely be similar, with perhaps, a bit less risk of QTc with nortriptyline. Not 100% sure.

I worry because Maprotiline can worsen psychosis. I tried Nortriptyline. Made my package go flaccid.

I wouldn't expect maprotiline to be dramatically different than nortriptyline. However, I have not taken maprotiline, so I can't directly compare.
All of the TCAs can worsen psychosis (as can many of the newer antidepressants too). An exception is amoxapine (not sure if you have tried this one). It is a strong antidepressant with antipsychotic qualities.

Not that much different from Mianserin & Mirtazapine: strong antihistamine, potent 5HT2A and minor 5HT2C antagonism. NET varies...
Nortriptyline is superior ;=)

actually...a former shrink recommended amoxapine to me. I was scared because its a community/public mental health clinic, and I was already on a full dose of Abilify. These places are -notorious- for high dose neuroleptics, crazy cocktails, etc. so, I declined. However...
had she offered to taper the Abilify and use the amoxapine in place of it, I might have jumped at it. At high(ish) doses, there's limited data that shows good results in psychotic disorders, plus more pronounced benefits for mood and anxiety than, say, risperidone.
prolactin elevation is an issue. td is an issue. still, its considered somewhat 'atypical' by some 'experts,' so...there's that. i wouldn't take it with seroquel, not long term...

ahh, okay :=)
Did you try Clomipramine and/or the irreversible non-selective MAOI: Parnate/Nardil?

I didnt try clomipramine and i did try MAOI. On maoi i went a little bit psychotic. Very resentful.
My doctor said if nortriptyline gives me sexual problems, then other tricyclics will, too.

Mirtazapine made me aggressive. other than that i liked it. So maybe Maprotilin is worth a shot?
