I am not a thyroid expert, but I think high thyroid is harder to treat than low thyroid.

Also, there is some evidence that slightly elevated thyroid can be protective against bipolar depression (thyroid has antidepressant and possibly mood stabilization effects).

If the thyroid is only mildly elevated, there may be justification in just leaving it.

How is your heart rate / blood pressure?

Also, you may want to avoid noradrenergic meds (stimulants, wwellbutrin etc) as you may get noradrenergic overstimuation (depending on how high your thyroid is).

Do you see an endocrinologist? A good one will test all the hormones of the thyroid and most likely do a scan. Do you have thyroid nodules as a lot of time they cause hyperthyroidism. Google Mary Shoman thyroid disease. She has many doctors and topics on thyroid. I get her daily newsletter as I have hasimotos thyroiditis. I think you will find her articles and expert advise from thyroid doctors interesting and may answer some of your question. Good Luck. Phillipa

Good that retesting. Her answer depending on the results could change your dose. I was stable on synthroid til last winter and then was losing weight so mine was lowered the dose. Can't wait to see what it is in January. No more weight loss but always tire more easily. Phillipa

I remember my mother having an overactive thyroid. She was 'over active' with a strange stair on her face, as if taken a good dose of amphetamine. Her doc prescribed a beta blocker (propranalol I think) until symptoms subsided. Thats all the details I remember.
I know some Psychs (mine included) prescribe thyroid hormone for mood disorders, and that low thyroid can cause depression. Definitely a balancing act.

Hi MK sounds like your Mother had Graves Disease of the thyroid as the eyes seem to buldge this is an autoimmune form of thyroid illness. In some cases a low thyroid when thyroid is added at the proper dose the depression can go away. I know my own hypothroidism is a pain as the levels do fluctuate. Right now they allowed the range to go to almost 5. The endocrinology society recommends that the best levels are 1-1.5 with 3 being top number. I don't feel psychiatrists should be treating thyroid illness. People should see an endocrinolist and then can be maintained by their internist. Phillipa

Well thanks Phillipa. Makes sense. Graves disease eh? Maybe cause she looked like she had seen a ghost? lol

I think that when a psych doc uses it its in very small doses. Not because of a sub clinical measurement but because for some reason it occasionally helps to add it to a med regime, rather than fix any high or low levels as such. Off label of course. Like I take Galantamine, an anti Alzheimers/dementia/Parkinson drug. Not because I have these conditions but because my doc has experience, or at least backed up references that some times it helps. Why? I doubt even he knows. But its true. (He's a Neuro-Psychopharmacologist btw)

lol I'm only going on what she told me. But she definitely said she had a constant stare! Still, wonder why she only needed a beta blocker and no op.

Definitely worth another google eliminating images from the search. If you read the article you will read that beta blockers are used first. I just learned something also Phillipa
