so I'm a month into my new batch of olanzapine, and it is making me very tired. I was taking 17mg a day after a week or 2 I had to decrease to 13mg and that worked for a while. but yesterday I took 7mg in the morning with my 8mg perphenazine, and I went right to sleep on the couch 3 hours later slept for probably 3 hour, woke up, just took the next 8mg perphenazine, had my usualy couple of drinks and feel asleep for the rest of the night right up untill 5pm, I must have slept for 14 hours. I totaly missed my 3rd dose of meds which would have been the other 7mg z and 8mg p. I don't get it, why was I so tired. I had been taking 13mg z a day for probably 2 weeks. I had a very vivid dream life and could not get out of bed even though I was constantly waking up. when I did get up I felt realy weird but took my 1st dose of meds when I got up, so after about an hourI felt great. Some how I realy injoyed this vacation from meds and started to think I should just go off them all. 4 hours after I got up I started to feel medicated again but not tired and wished I could just do away with all meds. but my mom reminded me that I just go down hill after being off meds for a while. so I went back to my usual med schedual. I really felt like I could do it this time and I was more alive than I have been in years. but she is right every time I go off meds i lose my job or end up in the mental hospital and always end up back on them in few months. by which time my mentality is realy screwed up and takes a really long time to go back to normal.
I just always have this idea that well maybe the time is right if I go off med now everything will be normal..
oh well.. back to the meds..

people with good support networks can sometimes taper off the psych drugs very, very, very slowly and cautiously. Its not as simple as just dropping them or getting off in a couple weeks (or even a couple months).

the longer you can manage without a psychotic episode the more clear headed you are. Dont do it

Given your diagnosis and history, I think that it would be prudent to continue with treatment. Also, if you stop taking sertraline (Zoloft), you might not respond to it as well once you restart it.
There are times when someone actually feels better when the dosage of a drug is reduced. It can be confusing, but it really does make sense that such a thing can happen. It probably has to do with changes in receptor sensitivities. It is a positive rebound improvement - sort of releasing a stretched rubber-band. Unfortunately, as real as this reaction is, it is not sustained for more than a week or two. In many cases, one can recapture the full therapeutic antidepressant response when the drug is restarted. However, it occurs too often that returning to the original antidepressant no longer works or does not work as well. I can't be sure, but it is my impression that the SSRIs are more likely to exhibit this behavior than other types of antidepressant medication.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Generally, this adage applies most to people who have been severely depressed for a long time, have recurring episodes, or have tried 3 or more antidepressant treatments.
I am becoming more and more impressed with Saphris (asenapine). I have seen many people respond well to it as both an antipsychotic and an augmenter to antidepressants. Weight-gain seems to be minimal. Sex drive remains intact. People report having their thoughts clear up become more energetic.
If you want, you can add Saphris first, and once established, attempt to discontinue Zyprexa (olananzapine). You don't want to go without coverage. A friend of mine does well with a combination of Navane (thiothixene) and Saphris. I understand that Saphris works particularly well when paranoia is present.

I ended up on a much higher AP dosage after i tried to discontinue them. So i ended up with much more than before.
The same dosage just wasnt enough after that.

sorry scott, I going to stick with my zyprexa and perpenazine. they both have worked so well. Every time I go off zyprea I relaps very quickly. I realized today that I have not gone for more than a full day totaly off z since I was in collage, 2003. and that was only for 5 days. so obviously its working.

there may be some truth in that. I've needed much higher doses of z since my abilify trial and that was 8 years ago. i never recovered.

there was one other time I felt like this. and that was in 2001. I really did think that if I went off it now I would be fine. I always kicked myself for not doing it right then. Later on I tried it and it was a horrible experience. Doc said the same would have happened then.

why did you go so high on seroquel and zyprexa? you recently doubled your z, and added 50% to seroquel.
how do you find the difference between seroquel and zyprexa? are they similar?
did you ever take any more of that cbd, while on s and z?

Zyprexa is worse for weight, Serouqel has more cognitive side effects. Other than that no difference.

I would prefer an extended release formulation of Zyprexa.

I was trying CBD and i became VERY anxious. The supervising doctor apologized it didnt work out.
CBD can actually be anxiogenic if taken chronically.

I don't think I could deal with the cognitive side effects. Glad now that I never tried it! I seem to be able to keep the weight down. I've gained a few pounds since starting zyprexa. But it seems to have platoed. Plus I've put on some mucle.

I don't think that would work as well.

I still take CBD. It does help. I take a much smaller dose than you did. that might be what made the difference. I do find it stabilizing. you also might have gotten the axiety from stoping the other APs you take, all at once. I do notice when I don't take it. I'm less calm and nervous. It kind of helps me think straight. Less worrysome. When I take too much its strong and usually puts me to sleep. Can't say it gives me anxiety.

Well,
psychiatry has set the goal to know in advance what is helpful to a particular person and what not. They are trying to help us. I know because my aunt had a lot to do with it professionally. She had to find the most advanced psych-research because the researchers get some kind of price for that from a foundation. You cant say nobody cares about us.
I dont think i became anxious because of the other antipsychotics. I think that this marihuana plant is just not for me.
I find great comfort in the knowledge that most people do care about us. It makes everything more bearable. We are not alone!

Well i am not so convinced anymore. You often hear how fabulous psychiatric meds can be, but nobody posts about how he is doing 10, 20 or 30 years after...
Heck, most meds havent even been known that many years ago.

I've been taking zyprexa for 20 years now. As long as I'm taking enough I have no problems. Works just as well as it did in the beginning. It has totaly changed my life. Giving me the ability work and function normaly like before I went psychotic. Zyprexa worked from day one to year 20! It was a really dramatic change from before zyprexa. Where I could not function like a normal humanbeing. I was house riden delusional couldn't eat sleep drive a car-to now where I have been working for most of the time on zyprexa making freinds going places. One thing though, my appatite has gone down since I started it. The only times I had problems was when I went off the zyprexa. Then I went back into the state I was in before, every time. If it weren't for zyprexa, who knows what would have happened to me. I'd probably be homless and on drugs.
Anouther thing I'm more functional in society than before I went psychotic. So ya, I would give zyprexa a 5 star! The other meds have come and gone over the years and are much less significant in my recovery. But some have helped, like perphenazine. Which is the first AP I was on that worked. I didn't take it for long because it made me tired. Probably had me on too high a dose. But I started taking it again, about 8 years ago, and it has been a great addition to zyprexa. Not exactly sure what its doing. But things are better since I added it. Going off it didn't help. I got really irritable and angry. Even before the perphenazine when on zyprexa I was always angryish.
Zoloft, I have been taking about 8 years as well. I took celexa for a few years right bofore that. Both were about as helpfull at reliving my depression and putting me in a good mood and more positive thinking.
So yes, I've had a really good response to meds. Atleast the ones that worked.

that sounds like a really positive response. How long were you delusional before Zyprexa?

not realy sure. Maybe a few years. off and on maybe. the worst of it was in college, right before going into the mental hospital. I remember looking at the door of the college and seeing all these colors. the first time I can remember being dulsional was a few years earlyer. I was with two guys and they were talking. I didn't know what they were talking about, but I thought they were talking in ridles. it was scary. I also remember in college being scared to go anywhere, like something would happen. Like going into the deli for the first time. One guy at school, told me to just walk in there and ask for a pound of roast beef. so I did it. not sure what I was scared of. a lot of things like that. I would pump gas and remember thinking weird stuff like the people were talking about me or the gas pump had a funny ora to it. a scary one. a lot of stuff was scary.
a lot of it I dont remember but . and in capacitor class I couldn't realy understand what he prof was explaining. I would look in the book at the pics of capacitor flux and I could not understand it. Oddly enough I had done realy well in curcuit class first semester. this time I was scared that I would not pass and started making all these cheat sheets which I never used because I ended up being pulled from school and sent to a lot of doctors, who said I was crazy. and ended up in mental hospital, where they gave a lot of ect and probably why I don't remember much. also the tv would talk to me aparently my mom later told me. I watched a lot of tv through this times. couldn't realy understand it. just thought what my mind would think. what ever weirdness that was. i really couldnt comprehend anythhing before the zyprexa. it was an alter reality. or I was dilusional. like at my job in school, where i thought weird stuff about everything. it was something I could not get out of. belive it or not I was not on any drugs at the time, I didn't even drink. but I had all these thoughts like that customers were all apart of a grand scheem of some drug organization.
so the first time I was really dilusional, probably 18. but I remember time even when very young that may have been dilusions. it was always a strange world to me as a kid. some times I got over it for a while.
