My sleep specialist said that the CR formulation was bunk. He prefered Restoril or Ativan. Tried both found them roughly equivalent but they would lose their effectiveness after a week or so , and would have required a dose escalation and I wasn't willing to get on that merry go round.
Right now I'm on 20 mg of regular Ambien, not the CR. It seems to continue to work at that dose, don't need more but less will not work. I anticipate being on it for a long time. And as an ultra short acting quasi-benzo I anticipate it will be difficult to withdraw from. But standard practice for withdrawal from benzos is to switch to a very long half life benzo like Valium and then slowly taper down and that's what I anticipate having to do with Ambien even though it's technically a Z drug not a benzo, I'm pretty sure the cross tolerance to benzos smeans a Valium taper will work when I need to withdraw. A cold turkey withdrawal would probably be ugly, very ugly.
This is the end of the thread.
