I take 1200mgs/Trileptal daily (600mgs x 2) for Bipolar I or...something. Anyway...
..ideally, you should at least do a baseline blood sodium check and another one a bit later...I wanna say 12 weeks later.
Its not for depression. Its used for agitation, mania and hypomania, and sometimes aggression and anger issues. Its cleaned up Tegretol.
I will say...I'm prone to psychotic agitated depression, and Trileptal does help with both my hypomania and the agitated part of bad depression. It is not, however, good for depression by itself ((my opinion)).
It can be sedating. Are you sure you want to add another sedating Rx pill to your ongoing treatment combo?
On the plus side...sometimes, people find that adding an anti-convulsant can keep their neuroleptic dose the same (avoid dosage escalation) or even taper a bit, which is always a good thing, from a safety perspective. I seem to recall reading that Lamictal is particularly good for this, but I dunno if I remember correctly...
If you take Trileptal, watch out for sedation and cognitive weirdness. I take lots of vitamins in large part because of the psych meds...the antiseizure drugs deplete c, e, b complex, d, and coenzyme q10 (so do neuroleptics, btw). I'd recommend supplements, personally.good luck!

For me, I experienced no side effects at all. I just kept an eye on my blood electrolytes at first to be sure that I didn't develop hyponatremia (low blood sodium).
Can it help with unipolar depression? Probably not. It can help with bipolar disorder and conditions that present with impulse control impairments. Combining Treleptal and Lamictal can work to treat bipolar disorder without having to add an antidepressant or antipsychotic.

I noticed an antidepressant effect at low doses. Mind you, I may have bipolar tendencies.

yea oxycarbazepine is a improved version of tegretol, i know someone who takes trileptal they've told me it makes them feel a bit more settled, but it's not really a antidepressant, maybe it will have some properties, but mostly triletal is for reducing firing in the brain, stablization of nuerotransmitters and voltage in the brain
lamotragine does help depression, it's hard to notice lamotragine....but i've noticed my mood is a bit settled and not wacky and up and down.....i've noticed some of my depression went away on it.....
the standard dose of trileptal is 300mg

That's encouraging. I'll keep that in mind.
I hope you are getting closer to feeling the way you would like to. I'm feeling a little better. It is quite possible that I found something that will ultimately bring me to remission, but I expect it to be a gradual and uneven ascent. I could plateau and get stuck, of course.

What is the half life of trileptal? Can it be used as a sleep aid?

yes....but it's not really a choice i doctor would make.....they would use it off label for sleep, if you asked your doctor something for sleep that would not be the first thing in mind......it just stablizes nueron firing, the voltage reduces over firing, producing a indirect calm.......
depakote also could be used for sleep too.....
