Stopping Then Restaring A Medication Can Cause

Posted by MeezerCat on May 27, 2014, at 21:45:42

Hello,

Can stopping then restarting a medication yield different results/side effects/symptoms? Or not even work the next time around?

I fear this may be the case with me.

I believe it can happen in Some People, Not All Though.

Why is this?

Does the brain basically become desensitized?

Thank You,
MeezerCat

I'd say yes to all you wrote. But the why is what's not clear. True some do go back on a med and have it work again and some it doesn't. I wish I knew why? Phillipa

Tachyphylaxis is a medical term describing an acute (sudden) decrease in the response to a drug after its administration. Tachyphylaxis can occur both after an initial dose of medication or after an inoculation with a series of small doses. Increasing the dose of the drug may be able to restore the original response. This can sometimes be caused by depletion or marked reduction of the amount of neurotransmitter responsible for creating the drug's effect, or by the depletion of receptors available to which the drug or neurotransmitter can bind. This depletion is caused by the cells reducing the number of receptors in response to their saturation ~ wikipedia

I have and am going through this very exact same thing! I started .25 mgs of Risperdal and LOVED LOVED LOVED it but was so terrified I would get a seizure as that was a side effect so I stopped taking it. Realizing how great I felt on it I went back after about 2 months and I didn't quite get that first ever so good feeling I got the first time. I did start getting a lot of anxiety and body tension and stopped it and it went away. NOW I'm on my 3rd time and determined to take it at the least through the summer while I watch my 4 grandkids and i'll be danged if I just cant hit that sweet spot again. I am at the same dose of .25 but I may as well be taking NOTHING! sooooo disappointed and I do not want to go up and up on this med as I am scared of it as it is for the side effects..so yep I agree that that does happen...living proof right here lol

I was taking zyprexa then switched to abilify and had a bad reaction to abilify so went back on zyprexa. The zyprexa did not work at all. So I kept taking it and after 6 weeks the zyprexa worked again. Anouther time I did the same and took the abilify for 6 months. Same bad reaction to the abilify. And went back on zyprexa it didn't work the same for many years, but slowly started to work again. So maybe you just need to give it more time to work again. The meds affect the way your brain grows and addapts to the med. So I guess if you switch to some thing else it has to readapt.

So you waited 6 months for ability to work again then you waited years for zyprexa to work again? That's Long time to wait for if to work and to me it would feel as if I was untreated. My Dr.wants me to bump up my dose but I'm going to hang I'm there another week or so since I have done good days then find bad days I'm hoping the good days will start to it out number the not so good. I assume you are finally doing good again or are you sill waiting?

Its not that it was doing nothing for the whole time, it just was not working as good as it was before the abilify. I knew it would work out because I had tried a much shorter trial of abilify before and was confidant that it would work. Besides what other option did I have? Nothing works as good as zyprexa for me.
