I believe I am having akathisia and insomnia from Latuda (even at 40mgs and have tried 20mgs but it was not enough to keep the depression at bay) and I am looking for another AP that has a similar anti depressant effect to Latuda that will be less likely to cause akathisia? I was on Zyprexa which didn't and seems to be the only one listed on Epocrates that doesn't have akathisia as a side effect. Zyprexa was good for anxiety but not for depression and also I am not looking forward to the weight gain. Many thanks,
Mogger

Geodon has a low incidense of extrapyramidal symptoms and great as an antidepressant-it agonizes 5ht1a and fht1b receptors and 5ht7 receptors which all effect mood. It aalso is a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepenephrine, making it an antidepressant as well as an antipsychotic.

Thanks Eric. Is there a chart of percentages comparing different APs in regards to incidences of side effects? How is Brintellix going? I am thinking of asking my doctor about it.

rxlist.com charts incidences of side effects for individual medication.
I had to stop Brintellix on account of vomiting my brains out.

Zyprexa can cause akathisia, mainly at high doses. It's not common at low doses. Seroquel probably causes the least akathisia out of the commonly prescribed antipsychotics.

What, if any, benefit did you glean from Brintellix? OCD? Depression? Anxiety?
Thank you.

Thanks Ed.
I am back on zyprexa as I had terrible akathisia on Latuda at even the lowest dose. Zyprexa is good for anxiety but of course weight gain is an issue that my doctor said can be curbed with metformin. He did say we could try Saphris but he did say Saphris can cause akathisia as well. Have you heard that? Thanks,
Mogger

Yes, Saphris sometimes causes akathisia, especially at higher doses. It was seen in clinical trials before launch.
Metformin is one possibility for helping to reduce the weight gain and risk of metabolic disturbances. Do you have any physical health problems or take any other meds?

Thanks Ed. I have OCD/depression so I don't think I would need a high dose of Saphris. I am on 5mgs of Zyprexa which is pretty low I think. Yes I take plenty of meds:
60mg buspar
150mg zoloft
400mg lamictal
1mg klonopin
30mg mirtazapine
5mg zyprexaMy pdoc said metformin is great for zyprexa weight gain. Never had too much of a problem with mirtazapine weight gain but funnily enough buspar has caused weight gain (sweet tooth) which is an uncommon side effect I hear. Perhaps the metformin could help that too or just zyprexa? Thanks for responding,
mogger

Possibly. Weight loss with metformin is usually fairly modest but it could be worthwhile trying it. Have much weight have you put on with Zyprexa?

Just started back up 2 nights ago. I haven't been on it for a few years. Put on 20 pounds the last time. My psychiatrist said the best thing is to start the metformin straight away to combat upcoming weight gain. Appetite is starting to fire up that is why I am getting worried. Ed have you tried Minocycline? Going to ask my psychiatrist about it.

Yes, it probably would be best to start metformin straight away given your previous experience. If you are over 65 (approx), your doctor should take a blood test for kidney function before you start. Other routine bloods can be done at the same time. If you are young with no medical problems the blood test may not be necessary.
I took minocycline many years ago for acne. Took it for over a year. I didn't notice any changes in my mental health though.
