simulant/antidepressant/benzo

Posted by marcus1968 on November 15, 2013, at 11:52:43

Hello,
Would it be unheard of or uncommon to add a stimulant to a Lexapro/klonopin combo for depression anxiety? I also use remeron to help sleep at night. The Lexapro/klonpin/remeron seem to work but leaves me very unmotivated/lethargic and why not add a stimulant to help boost cns activity. I always drink coffee to make me feel more alert(many cups a day) besides I was once dx'd as adhd but I didn't want to go the medicine route being that ai am 45...... any thoughts

I mean, it could work, I guess. There's always concern that little goof balling might lead to mood instability (been there, done that...it can wreak havoc on people), but if your doc is up for it and you keep the doses in check, maybe it'd be OK.

Have you tried supplements? I know, you're like "you hippy!," but seriously: they're cheaper and safer than ritalin or amphetamines.

That said, I've known people on high dose adderall plus a steady dose of klonopin for years with no apparent problems. The AD might add to the risk of serotonin syndrome, drug induced (hypo)mania and agitation and psychosis, etc., but it could possibly work. I mean, its been done before, right?

Personally, I'd take Ritalin or focalin over an amphetamine in this situation. Just a personal pick based on limited experience. An XR formulation would be ideal, too, maybe with a mid-afternoon IR pick-me-up. Just a suggestion. Clearly, I have 0 training, so please do your own homework and talk to your doc at length.

Good luck!

I must have tried every herbal possibility I could think of for months on end. rhodiola, tyrosine, acetyl l car. etc. I just seem to get too jittery?? I took my brothers 18mg concerta once and felt like a light bulb was switched on that day??

Family history brother on concerta. How old were you when you took the concerta? Teen or adult you didn't say? Can you doc evaluate you for it. I just feel it's a bit late in life to now have this. But then I as CE have no experience. Phillipa

I feel this is a pretty strong sign that this medication could do something for you. You took it. It worked. However, stimulants are notorious for never working as well as they did that first day. Just FYI--now, you CAN increase the dose to compensate, but I'd guess the compensation will be only partial. Concerta can also be dependence forming, but....well, that depends on who you are--some people are more addictive and others. In short, I'm trying to say that there are risks, and it may not work as well as that first magic dose (and that there's now solid evidence that, yes, stimulants genuinely aren't good for your heart, though the risk is probably not great, especially if the dose is kept low. Do you have heart conditions in your family? If not, great).

It's a good idea to try, I just want to make sure you go knowing the drawbacks. Stimulants are serious business, even ritalin, so, you know, even if it helps you, respect the medication :) (is my advice)
