For those of you that have taken MAOs for your depression, I am curious if one or the other worked better for you. I know the original Nardil was the bomb and I too went into a major setback when it was reformulated in 2003. I just became aware that Nardil has a generic version now so I'm interested in those that have tried this also.
I was recently on Marplan with so-so results so my doc is having me try Nardil which I have also taken in the last 2-3 years with fair results.
Do any of you feel one is better han the other and if so what dose worked best?
Parnate an Ensam never worked for me.
Thanks in advance. I'm in a pretty bleak place triggered by my divorce in 2010. I am not leaving my house and cannot work. Life has simply gotten too difficult to navigate and I used to be pretty functional especially on the oiginal Nardil. Is there any hope for me?

For me, Marplan was the least effective of the irreversible MAOIs. (Reversibles were even less effective for me). Autonomic side effects are reduced with Marplan compared to Nardil. Although they exist, I rarely hear an account of someone doing better on Marplan than on Nardil. One interesting strategy to treat Nardil poop-out is to discontinue it for 3 months and then restart it.
Divorces can be sad and emotionally tumultuous, even when the divorce is acknowledged as being the best course of action by both parties. I am sorry for your loss.

SLS,
Thank you for your support. I've taken all 3 MAO's and responded the best to Nardil in 2003 before it was pulled from the market. I tried it again over the years with questionable responses. Parnate was the only one I did not remember responding to. My med history begain in the late 80's and Nardil was the first med I had success with.
I just filled my script for generic NArdil and will begin tomorrow.
Are you doing better yourself? I know your struggles have been great. My depression has put me in a place unlike any I've been in before. It is terrifying to find myself here. I am losing hope fast as there are few options when your depression is so treatment resistent. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. I wanted to try TMS but Medicare will no cover it.

I've been feeling better, thanks. I raised my dosage of Parnate to 100 mg/day. I may go to 120 mg/day if I get "stuck".

I am so sorry. I can commiserate. However, I haven't been in as bad a place as you are now for a few years. I am hoping the Nardil brings you much deserved relief.
One step at a time. If Nardil by itself provides inadequate improvement, you have some options available to you to augment the Nardil.
My current regime looks like this:
Parnate 100 mg/day
Nortriptyline 150 mg/day
Lamictal 200 mg/day
Lithium 450 mg/day
Abilify 10 mg/day
Minocycline 200 mg/day
Prazosin 25 mg/dayThe TMS is viable alternative. I am looking at "deep TMS" as a new application of magnetic stimulation. It was approved by the FDA in January of 2013.
Keep memories of healthy times. It will help you to retain hope that good times are coming.
