I called Roche(which is now genentech, I guess)to discuss splitting the 1mg pill which is not scored.(to save $ and not have to take the generic, which is ok,but I like roche)I became alarmed after the pharmacist there became alarmed that Ive been on klonopin for 4 yrs. She stated that they advise no more than 9 weeks use, that it was never tested beyond that. She suggested that I work out a taper with my doctor. This is a pharmacist that is working for Roche,so what does she know about benzos that we dont? Do I just need to get some perspective?

That's the company line I guess. How many AD's were tested beyond 'weeks? I've been on Klonopin at least ten years. Maybe the pharmacist just graduated and has no real world experience.

thats the perspective I was looking for. I did tell her that I gave ssris a valiant effort, and gained 30lbs,which I lost after tapering the med.The klonopin causes no weight gain for me,and really no side effects. I felt as if she really had dark thoughts about long term klonopin use. Seemed eerily foreboding,as if she had a secret she could not share...

This is from NAMI's website.
Are these any risks for taking Klonopin® for long periods of time?
To date, there are no known problems associated with long term use of clonazepam. It is a safe and effective medication when used as directed. Benzodiazepines may produce emotional and/or physical dependence (addiction) even when used as recommended. Physical dependence may develop after 2 or more weeks of daily use.
One doc on a website said, yes it's for short term but if you need it you need it.Yes 4 weeks would be great and there are people that will say get off of it and maybe with good reason. But a lot of people take it 15-20 years. I was started at 3 mg and another doc went to 1.5. I don't remember tapering or having any problems but it was a while ago.

Yes, i'm the perfect candidate:), so the info youve submitted sounds good. Im trying to tell my self a different story about klonopin. That its the fountain of youth, that it will keep my overactive brain in check, that it will prevent my horrific heart attack that is surely my fate with untamed anxiety.

Gadchik remember klonopin is used by many for decades as seizure medication in doses in up to 20mg. What you are taking is nothing. Over 43 years benzos for me. The government is more worried about long term use of antipsychotics in the elderly. First time in years my medicaire now pays for benzos. So the government approves says safer even than SSRI's. P

Friends,
It is written here,[...Do I just need to get some pespective?...].
I am prevented to post here what I think could save lives and prevent life-ruining conditions and addictions in regards to aspects of Benzodiazepines due to prohibitions posted to me here by Mr Hsiung.
You see, benzene is a substance that can cause cancer. And it has been used in mass-murder. A lot of the drugs promoted here have s one of their chemical constituants, benzene.
Now I think that if you knew what I know about benzene, you could make a more-informed decision as to take drugs that have benzene in their chemical composition. It is too bad that readers here do not have the opportunity to know what I know that is prohibited for me to post here. And there is another prohibiton to me that prevents me from posting a link to historical records that could not only be educational, but supportive as well.
Now you parents that are having your child drugged in collaboration with a psychiatrist/doctor and the drug has benzene as one of its chemical componants, I pity the child that had no knowledge of what you are putting into their body's structures and nervous system that could give them a lifetime of suffereing and misery. And more than that, the drug could put them in a mind -altered state to compel them to kill themselves and/or others. I'm talking about theaters, and schools an shopping centers and places where there are lots of innocent children and adults that could become victims of mass-murder. I pity the parents that were not told that the drugs could increase their thinking that could cause murder/suicide to the taker of the drug. And why were they not told? Why are there these prohibitions to me here that prohibit me from posting educational material that could give readers a better perspective of what these drugs are? And how many deaths will it take before they are allowed to hear me?
The answer, my friend, is seen on the admin board.

That's a very alarmist statement that goes against decades of clinical experience. My pdoc has told me that she has had patients on klonopin for years, with no ill effects, no dosage escalation or loss of effect, etc.

She was playing safe - when benzos were released they were approved for short term use, but hundereds of thousands of people have used them long term and have not founf any problems other than mild dependency in most cases. The thing is, drug company employees cantpromote their drugs for off label use, thus the 9 weeks thing.
Wehn the pill was tested, it was tested on women for 3 years before it was marketed, but nowadays, some women spend 35 years on the pill.Benzos have been in use for 50 years, their good and bad efects are well known, and if your doc feels comfortable with you taking clonazepam, I'd be happy with that.

Jono, ur right, she asked me why I was prescribed it before stating about the 9 weeks. And she did say that she couldnt recommend splitting the 1mg because it wasnt scored, but that my dr might feel its ok. I just was alarmed that an employee of Roche was mentioning to taper off of a drug that they sell! I can always set up the worse case scenario in my head about anything.

Thanks. I now recall a visit to an internal medicine specialist a couple of yrs ago, she just happened to be the dr working at the clinic where I get my exams. She did reassure me that I could take klonopin for the rest of my life, as long as my kidney and liver were working properly.

My GP also told me that if need be, I could take Xanax for the rest of my life, provided the dose was stable and not creping up.

So much misinformation out there. Docs have a license and value them. In no way would they want a malpractice suite. If you are stable on it and you have said you are. Carry on and ignore misinformation. P

>when benzos were released they were approved for short term use,
Is this right?
I was not in a position to read the literature around 1970, but my impression from my doctor was that benzos were the best thing since sliced bread, or at least compared to the barbiturates, which, oddly, seems to have been the same thing.
On the NHS you got 50 with a repeat.
At that time it was said to be just a question of psychological dependence (whatever that is, I guess that is what weedy neurotics do). Back then we were much more optimistic (or at least he was...a lot of free samples and stuff). Many of us, anyway.

I was told my new psych dr that Klonopin is a very powerful drug and that 1mg is equivalent to 40 mg of Valium.

I felt that it was very strong when I first tried it. Even though it has helped me alot, I sometimes wish it was never put on the table. I always dealt with my demons by exercise and healthy diet, somehow that failed me on my last breakdown. I have things I dont like about using drugs that are deep rooted, and I have a love/hate relationship with benzos.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I wish I knew what I was getting myself into. Good luck.

1 mg is equal to 20 mg valium.

I knew that I should stick with a low dose and only take once a day when I started klonopin, even though was prescribed double that and twice a day! I do wish I'd have stuck with .25mg instead of .5mg. My anxiety was so awful that I felt compelled to alleviate it. But once it was controlled, I wish that I had been wise enough to taper off and then only use as needed.

I'd like redirect discussion about benzene to a different thread:

And we might try something new there...

Thanks for the info. I think from now on I'm going to record every single visit with my psych doctors on my cell phone. I'm sick and tired of all the misinformation and confusion and if you call them on it they deny it. They should be the experts.
This is the end of the thread.
