Lithium Ororate

Posted by jono_in_adelaide on November 4, 2012, at 23:13:50

The doses of this that are avaliable (5mg or so of lithium per pill) seem to be homeopathci to me compared to the doses used as a drug - would they have any effect other than placebo?

its available in 120mg...but i have to say it has a big diffrence than carbonate...alot of it would have to be taken to be noticed. I was at a website that told the equival....i can't find it right now. 120mg is the highest strength you can get as I know of.

google and type 120mg ororate and it will pull up from online stores...if you have a healthfood store that is a bit expanded to diffrent supplements, like I got it at vitamin shoppe...a long time ago...still it may be useful for people who need it. But like I said...the dose equivalence is really far from carbonate. I'll try to find the exact.

"its available in 120mg"

Yes, but that is = to 5mg of elemental lithium

You'd need to take about 100 tablets a day to get a theraputic dose

yea...your right i didnt think of that....that really makes me feel silly...guess its a supplement rather than a OTC psych med.

you know whats really intresting is chinese medicine....i was looking up medical association of china, they have diffrent views than westurn[US] and they use alot of plant stuff but there vary potent, its not like you take grass and put in the blender and say its healthy, the stuff they use is like weed. Let me see If can find it and ill post it. But still, it would be impossible to import it to the US. :(

I'll look and research some more on supplements that are known to work for psych stuff.

No need to feel silly rj - my mum was a pharmacist, and I remember her saying once that calcium gluconate 0.5gm tablets were 500mg of calcium, when infact they were only a fraction of that - easy mistake to make (and indeed the manufacturers encourage you to make it by their labeling)

Be carefull of supposed "chinese herbal remedies"

The TGA tested some here recently, a "herbal" weightloss pil actualy contained sibutamine (reductil), a herbal pill for nerves was actualy laced with diazepam, and a herbal arthritis pill contained diclofenac and several other drugs

Needless to say, i am sure there are others they havent found yet

maybe some people just don't need that much lithium? One of the more popular sodas today...7 up or sprite, I forget which..used to have lithium in it, to calm the nerves. I doubt they used high amounts, kinda like coke contained small amounts of cocaine, but it wasn't a big deal.

Anyway, I wouldn't run to the health food store for severe mania and/or psychosis, anyway. For those with milder problems, maybe its just what the doctor ordered.

"For those with milder problems, maybe its just what the doctor ordered"

You're right - for those with mild disorders, a harmless placebo IS just what the doctor ordered, the form it takes is imaterial

I ordered lithium orotate online from the Vitamin Shoppe yesterday afternoon. Maybe it will have an effect, maybe not. Probably not, unless I take massive amounts at a time, which I'm not going to do. I just can't get lithium from my pdoc b/c I don't have bipolar disorder; just occasional psychosis. I'm experimenting. I'll keep ya'll updated.

What conditions are you attempting to treat that your doctor should refuse you lithium treatment?

Some people are successful at treating unipolar depression by adding low-dose lithium (300 - 600 mg/day) as an augmenter of antidepressants. For me, 300 mg works best.
