Spots on scalp when taking ADs

Posted by rculater on September 26, 2012, at 3:58:11

Whenever I am taking anti depressant medication, I suffer from 1 or 2 extremely sore small boils/spots on my scalp. They last about a week, dissapear, then re appear in a slightly different location but generally they appear directly in the middle of the back of my head just above the hairline and an inch either side to the right or left.
When I stop any medication, the spots go.

Does anyone else experience this ? Anyone have any clues as to what is happening ?

Someone said its my brain trying to release the toxins of the medication. Or its my Liver.

That happens to me too, though all over my scalp. I pick at them til they bleed. It's my own personal method of self-injury.
I certainly don't recommend that, but truly, I wouldn't over worry about the spots, I'm sure they are benign.

Hvanet heard of this, and it seems a little odd, given that antidepressants are chemicaly so varied and unrelated.

Have you tried using a medicated shampoo (say head and shoulders) each day to see if this is of any help?

Maybe see a dermatologist if this is a concern. Phillipa

I know it's really odd, and this is the first time I've opened up about it. In fact, I just today told my therapist about it. But I figure it is better than cutting, much safer; my only risk is that my hair will fall out. I do it when I'm feeling really anxious and it is a crutchh and I can't stop myself from doing it. My therapist said not to worry about it and that we will deal with it when I get past the bigger issues of all the traumas in my past. Thanks for your concern.

It sounds a bit like my chronic cuticle picking til cuticles bleed. I'm always doing this. Phillipa

I do the same thing too Phillipa! And did you know that Queen Elizabeth I (the one who ruled back in the 1500s) reportedly did the same thing! We have something in common with a Queen! :)

Yes tried all that. Even got a topical antibiotic. I think it's my body ridding itself of toxins. I suspect my liver is not functioning properly. I dunno. Effexor gave me the spots below hairline on neck. Horid

I really think that your condition is nothing to worry about, and I think your liver is just fine. Just leave the spots alone, don't pick at them or mess with them, and they will probably slowly go away on their own. Seriously, nothing to worry about. the best to you, have a good weekend
