Neurontin=disinhibtion? can i PRN it?

Posted by Christ_empowered on September 24, 2012, at 10:37:53

My (quite competent) shrink put me on 900 neurontin. 300 x 3. Great stuff...sometimes. Sometimes, I feel a little too chatty. Like, disinhibited sort of chatty. Plus, kinda walk a little drunkenly.

Ugh. Its strange, because I used to take benzos. Loooking back, those made me a bit too...at ease, I suppose. Can I PRN my neurontin? Its just terrible, because it works fairly well at decreasing agitation, but then I think...maybe I'm one of those people needs a bit of agitation and anxiety, like maybe it keeps things interesting and keeps me from flattening out completely?

So, yeah...can I PRN the gabapentin? Any alternative med suggestions? In my dream world, I'd take something along with my Abilify in 1-2 doses that would reduce agitation, not make me stupid, not be a controlled substance, and not require constant dosage changes. OH, and it could not be: a neuroleptic; depakote; lithium; vistaril; or most sri drugs.

Thanks.

Doxepin, trimipramine, Lyrica, clonidine?

Or as Phillipa says, a lower dose of Neurontin?

I think I should avoid an AD. I know, I just recently posted about maybe Surmonil, but...ADs make me petulant and flat and sometimes exacerbate psychosis.

I'll ask about Lyrica, but I doubt it. Public Health clinic in the southeastern US...controlled substances are (almost) always out of the question.

Trimipramine and doxepin have very little reuptake inhibitor activity, they mainly act as sedatives (through the H1 receptor) and blockers of the 5HT2 receptors.

Given that doxepin is so cheap and is not abuseable, it might be worth trying.

In early studies it was found to be as effective a tranquiliser as chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

Pro re nata - "as the circumstances arise", or more commonly translated as "as needed" or "when required"

Thanks. I was also curious as to whether for you gabapentitn had any mood lifting properties, however slight.

Initially, the gabapentin *did* have mood lifting properties, probably because it decreased my anxiety+agitation levels. On the other hand, it made me loopy. :-(

What I might try doing is taking 600-900 at night in one dose and then start taking it AM. Maybe that'll work.

i took it PRN for quite a while.
the only thing i noticed is if i started taking full rx (5xday) then stopped suddenly i would get a crazy headache the next day.

also if i Didn't use it, or onyl low dose for a while and quickly went up i'd get loopy. when i stayed regular i would avoid loopiness and headaches.

i would try to stay as consistent as i could but due to stress or biology some days would be crazy with anxiety, others nothing.

kinda wish i was still on it.
i do believe it helped with my mood.

Keppra! Improves cognition, will decrease agitation, is not a controlled substance, can be taken PRN and doesn't require constant dosage changes!
