Should I try bupropion (Wellbutrin)? serot effect?

Posted by Franz on April 15, 2012, at 19:46:03

Hello. I am taking 5 mg escitalopram which is what I can tolerate. I feel less anxiety but also low motivation or energy, many times I want to stay in bed or reading instead of working.

Doc gave me modafinil but I take it occasionally in 50 mg dose.

Tianeptine is expensive.

I am thinking on bupropion. Will it be more stimulating? How does it affect serotonin? Supposedly I have low serotonin.

According to Wikipedia:

"Bupropion does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or serotonin reuptake. However, it has been shown to indirectly enhance the firing of serotonergic neurons, via activation of downstream norepinephrine flow."

Maybe it is even good for serotonin transmission?

How about anxiety?

Thanks

Anxiety I can comment on as was for me horrible even with a combo of benzos. But this was me. Phillipa

Franz,

I didn't know that Wellbutrin (bupropion) indirectly affected the firing of serotonergic neurons, but what you quoted from Wikipedia seems to make sense.

I didn't feel particularly stimulated when I took Wellbutrin SR, but some people do report feeling significantly more stimulated and energetic on the medication. I think that it would be worth trying to see if it might give you a meaningful boost in energy.

Anxiety wasn't a significant problem for me when I took Wellbutrin, but I would say that if the medication had any effect on me anxiety wise that it might have made it a little worse. Mostly, Wellbutrin didn't have much of an effect on my mental well being.
