Scared to tell Doctor Help please

Posted by Preese768 on August 25, 2010, at 6:26:25

Well Hi everyone I'm new to the boards my name is Patrick. Hi everyone :)

I came to this board to see if anyone can help me out because i am dead scared to tell my doctor what goes on in my brain. I think he will think im a freak. We'll I would like to explain some of it here and maybe someone can give me some advice or suggestions what they think my diagnosis might be.

The past couple years i've been having these weird experiences when im usually alone by myself in my bedroom, or when i'm out on the road driving my car. But especially my bedroom. I let it get completely silent and i can vaguely hear someone yelling foul words at me like "Your a loser", "your a fa*". You get the point. At first,I ignored it because there's no one here. But for the last couple years when it happens all the time when its completely dead silence ill give these voices yell at me. I dont know why. I first thought maybe it could be the neighbors yelling at each other. But it wasnt. And it scares and frightens me where i literally my heart stats pounding and im scared of everything now. What can i do? I would be so ashamed to tell my doctor this, he would totally think im some nut, i was trying to think is it skitzophrenia? i dont know. I do take meds for depression and social anxiety. But i cant get rid of this problem and i hate it.
Sorry for the long post everyone. Considering it was my first, im sorry. I'm just trying to look for some guidance and maybe some help, if anyone could try and give me some sound advice, i would super appreciate it.
Patrick

I wouldn't venture to guess a diagnosis. But I would urge you to take the plunge and mention these things to your doctor. He can't be that useful to you unless you tell him anything that might clarify what you need from him. It'll likely not be anywhere near as bad as you fear. They're professionals. Or at least the good ones are professional.

I agree with Dinah it will likely be nothing as bad as you fear and to share this with your doc right away because it is causing you this distress! He needs to know in case he needs to change/adjust a medication, in the meantime, remind yourself what Dinah wrote that it's likely to be nothing as bad as you fear!!! You're not alone. Let us know what happens.

It's OK, just ask your doc for a referral to a psychiatrist. If you don't feel comfortable telling him what's happening the psychiatrist will do it for you. It's a normal response that most of us here have been through.

Your doc won't think you're a freak but it sounds like it's time to see a specialist and please do it soon. It will be OK.

I think you should tell your doctor. I am sure he heard much worse. When I get really depressed the same thing happens to me. My doctor tried several anti-psychotic and my body didn't like them (weird side effects for me). I have gotten use to the dialogue that sounds SO REAL. The only real danger would be if the dialogue starts telling you to do bad and dangerous things.

Please tell your doctor.

Patrick, your doc will be fine when you tell him. As for the voices, it might reassure you to know that hearing them is not uncommon, especially for people who are depressed, but it must be distressing to have the voices be so negative about you. Your doctor will no doubt have suggestions or referrals that can help you understand and deal with this problem. Take care.

Sounds like schitzophrenia. You might want to tell your doctor, so you can get on a antipsychotic. I have this.

Preese78,

Please tell your doctor! They will not think you are strange-doctors want to help us best they can.

I also wanted to mention that having a voice talk to you in your head is not always schitzophrenia-it's very common with OCD and other conditions where one has a harsh superego. I had a voice in my head several times, saying 'I hate you' and other weird stuff...told 2 different psychiatrists. They said it was no big deal. Yeah, I was scared too! Then really suprised is was nothing to worry about and just an ocd symptom.

It might be a symptom of schitzophrenia in your case, none of us know, but wanted to point out that possibility. It's not uncommon with non- schizophrenics.

I suspect maybe the difference may be whether the voice seems to come from within your head as opposed to perceiving it as coming from outside of your head, the latter sounding more like a symptom of schizophrenia.

Please tell your doctor! They have heard it all..

Hi Patrick,

Auditory hallucinations are sometimes experienced during severe depressive episodes (psychotic depression).

I don't know if they can be mixed or not. But I've never heard on here that they can't.

I have had psychotic depression where I heard voices telling me to kill myself. I am now taking an MAOI and an older anti-psychotic for psychotic features (perphenazine). MAOIs can be mixed with older neuroleptics and with some of the AAPs like seroquel. I'm not sure what else. I was told no abilify or risperda. So you have to check with your doc. Auditory hallucinations are not uncommone in depression and mania. It doesn't mean you're schizophrenic

Patrick did you say you were on an MAOI? Which one and I feel it's especially important to let your doc know right away. Could be the med? You never know. You didn't mention meds you've taken in the past unless I missed it. Please post back and let us know what you doc say okay? Phillip and welcome to babble

Patrick, don't be afraid to tell your doctor. Your symptoms could be a result of something other than what you suspect, and they could even have something to do wth the meds you are on.
Take care,
Maya.
