I have read conflicting information, and realize it's somewhat personal as to what can be tolerated. I'm on Parnate. I'm curious to know if other members eat or have to avoid these things: caffeine, pizza, plain yogurt, sardines. And I know cheddar cheese is out--is something like Monterey Jack cheese safe? How about raw milk? Thank you, Teresa

Hi there, I take 100 mg of Parnate a day and I have been lucky as far as being able to eat stuff that I am not supposed to eat such as cheddar cheese and red wine.
I know that other members have said that Monterey Jack is ok. Pizza is okay as long as it's Mozerella cheese. Plain yoghurt is fine as well. I don't know about sardines because that is not something I would eat. Caffeine is okay as well as long as it doesn't give you a headache. So if you were to have a reaction to any foods the first you would feel would be a headache at the base of your neck. At that point take the whatever emergency med your doctor has prescribe ( I use Thorazine) and don't eat that food again. I've had a couple of hypertensive crises. One from HOMEMADE red wine (I am fine with store bought) and soy sauce. I didn't need to go to the hospital.
I hope this helps.
Maxime

i think anchovies might be a risk, but not sardines.
Histamine and Tyramine in Preserved and Semi-preserved Fish Products
ABSTRACTData were obtained on histamine and tyramine contents in 48 samples of preserved and semi-preserved Spanish fish products. Ranges of concentration for both amines were wide: from 1.35 to 219.20 mg/ kg for histamine, and from 0.5 to 66.40 mg/kg for tyramine. Higher concentrations were found in semi-preserved anchovies than in the rest of the samples studied: canned tuna, herring, mackerel and sardines. In semi-preserved anchovies stored at room temperature (18-22°C), histamine production was observed after 6 months. The increase in histamine was not observed in the samples stored under refrigeration (4-6°C). Tyramine did not increase at either temperature of storage.

If you go to wikipedia and look up MAOIs, there's a very useful link to food restrictions. Basically, all cheese, except American and mozzeralla are out. I have been on parnate for a year and sometimes will have a couple of tablespoons of parmesan, which I'm not supposed to have. My p-doc said it probably takes a couple of ounces to cause a problem. So be careful of cheddar and monterey jack. They are both aged and contain tyramine.

I'm on Nardil and I have raw milk daily with no problems - I drink about 1 quart per day.

Hi Teresa,
I've been on Nardil for over a decade and I do eat some of the contraindicated foods. In my experience with Parnate, it seems to be a lot easier to have a hypertensive episode than with Nardil. I even had a rare auto-hypertensive episode with Parnate; that ended my last trial with the medication. With Nardil, I drink coffee, eat pizza with mozzarella, all kinds of yogurt, most alcohol-except tap beer & red wine, Monterey Jack cheese, Parmesan cheese, sour cream, snow peas and lots of other stuff. While on Parnate, I was a lot more careful. I would drink small amounts of coffee, but it wired me out so bad, that I gave it up.
Almost all over the counter cold medicines are no go. I do use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) with Nardil and have never had a problem. Guaiphenesin(Robitussin) is an expectorant and is OK as long as nothing is added to it like a cough suppressant. Most narcotic pain relievers are OK unless they affect serotonin like meperidine and tramadol. Straight codeine is fine as a cough suppressant, but again, nothing added to it.
Be Well,
Jedi
