Effect of stimulants on ADD with SAD

Posted by zarathustra on April 10, 2010, at 4:48:12

My question is difficult to formulate for others to understand, please forgive.
I have social-anxiety-disorder, and am aware of many ways to manage it using CBT methods.
I also have ADD and have currently restarted dexedrine.
It seems that when I am unmedicated or on concerta I dont have the focus, concentration, and "interest" in combating the SAD. When I am on Dexedrine, I am very diligent using strategies, journals, listening daily to a very good audio CBT series, tracking my emotions and thoughts etc. HOWEVER I feel very "anxious" on Dexedrine, but I had a thought today: could the Dexedrine be not causing anxiety per-se, but causing me to focus on that which I'm trying not to focus on? In a sense preventing my normal maladaptive "avoidance" of issues thoughts and situations which cause me social anxiety, by forcing me to deal with whats on my mind with clarity and focus.
I'm not sure what I am asking, I guess I'm hoping for some insight. Living with both of these disorders concurrently is a nightmare, it seems like there is such a complex relationship between the two, and its so hard to decipher.
Actually I should bite my tongue, there are many conditions which I can imagine are alot worse.

Thanks
Andrew

Stimulants can make people goal oriented. But, like you mention, they can also make you more self contious.

Some studies suggest that dexedrine preparations result in improved social functioning vs. methylphenidate (ie concerta), in people with ADHD.

Improved motivation can be a good thing, but sometimes it can become excessive. Do you think your strategies for combatting SAD are effective?
