I posted last Thursday that I was starting on 40 mg Strattera the next morning. Friday, Saturday, and last night I have NOT gotten any "real" sleep and I am hoping that this is not a long term side effect. I am tired at my usual bedtime and read my few pages of my current book that I normally do and turn out the light and then BAM my eyes are closed but it feels like I'm staring at the ceiling! That or if I DO start to fall asleep I am suddenly "startled" by what feels like a huge adrenaline rush.
If this is what I have to look forward to I may just have to bite the bullet and live with my ADD and all of it's maddening symptoms as I feel worse now than before. If someone can tell me that "this too shall pass" relatively soon I will do my best to hang tight...
I know it's only been 3 nights but 3 nights on no real sleep feels like much longer :(
Thanks in advance for feedback from anyone using strattera
Sleepless in CA (LOL)

Hey toot...what's up?
Strattera is a noradrenaline reptake inhibitor..so it increases the "nuero" norepinehrine [noradrealine] which is responsible for attention and alertness. It does cause...a "adrenaline" feeling because it is increasing it, I think what's going to happen is you'll stablize, i started wellbutrin [omg! nightmare but i stayed with it entil the antidepressant effect started]
I rerember sleepleness with Strattera...you might just want to go to 25mg, ask something about anxiety like hydroizyine which is fav. for anxiety among doctor's
best luck

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxyzine
This is a med that is not addicting like benzo's, and is great for anxiety.
For sleep, the only thing I can say is Ambien, or Lunesta [more effective]. Just tell your doctor about this sleeping difficulty and this "adrenaline" feeling from strattera, so he/she can work on tweaking the correct medication.
Best luck

Doc started me at 40 mg based on my weight and some formula they use for dosing...I have to call his office this Friday to give my "first week of usage report" LOL Hmmm maybe I'll call today and ask if ok to take the Lunesta...

Hi Toots,My pdoc has no problem w/ me taking lunesta or sonata w/ strattera.
I take strattera at night--because it makes me sleepy! And we dialed my dose way down to 20mg.
Does it really help with your ADD?
best,

fb,
Doc told me ok to take 2mg Lunesta and boy has it been a godsend....
I'm on 40 mg Strattera and that is based upon some formula based on your body weight that docs use as a guideline for dosing..
I was told to take it in the morning....and probably that is a good thing because I seem to actually have more energy as opposed to being sleepy from it.
As far as whether it helps with my ADD that remains to be seen...I just started taking it last Friday so I am sure it will be weeks before it truly reaches any theraputic level....
will stay in touch....
take care,
toots
