Is ritalin a dopamine releaser?

Posted by conundrum on November 29, 2009, at 20:33:09

I have read information stating that ritalin is a dopamine releaser like its cousin amphetamine and other sites with conflicting information saying it is simply a DAT blocker. Does anyone here know which is true? Is ritatlin a DAT blocker or a DA releaser?

Also is a substrate the same thing as a releaser?

Methylphenidate exerts its therapeutic effects via blocking the reuptake of dopamine into nerve terminals (as well as stimulating the release of dopamine from dopamine nerve terminals) resulting in increased dopamine levels in the synapse. Methylphenidate is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which means that it increases the level of the dopamine neurotransmitter in the brain by partially blocking the dopamine transporter (DAT) that removes dopamine from the synapses. This inhibition of DAT blocks the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine into the presynaptic neuron, increasing the amount of dopamine in the synapse. It also stimulates the release of dopamine and norepinephrine into the synapse. Finally, it increases the magnitude of dopamine release after a stimulus, increasing the salience of stimulus.

I saw this on wikipedia but i wondered if there was a more reliable source and if it explained how ritalin stimulated dopamine release.

dexamphetamine releases dopamine and reptakes it.

I saw where tramadol supposedly antagonizes nmda receptors. Would this prevent stimulant tolerance. Some seem to believe that nmda antagonists prevent stim tolerance.

If you need DA why not try an AP? I haven't heard of people becoming tolerant to low dose APs.

Yes, I think that methylphenidate is a dopamine release. I have read however, that it affects monoamine release less and reptake more than amphetamine does.

Cool thanks for the info. For me ritalin feels somewhat similar to wellbutrin, atleast at 5mgs.
