An alternative to Zyprexa..?

Posted by jms600 on June 3, 2009, at 16:53:32

Can anyone give me some idea of a viable alternative to Zyprexa for anxiety?

I took 10mg of Zyprexa for several months some time back along with 75mg Effexor, 40mg Buspirone and 600mg lithium. My anxiety diminished and my depression seemed to lift - something the Effexor/buspirone/lithium couldn't do on their own! The only trouble is I piled on pounds and pounds in weight which made me sluggish and, if anything, a little more depressed again!

Are any of the other atypical antipsychotics useful in treating severe anxiety (GAD, panic phobia) and also help lift depression, yet cause LESS weight gain than Zyprexa? I've considered taking Seroquel or Risperidone with my current combo but I don't know how effective they are in helping anxiety and depression - and also how much weight gain they cause.

Whatever I take, it will be along with Effexor and burspirone (my p/doc may drop the lithium).

Unfortunately benzos aren't an option due to tolerance.

Any ideas anyone?

I to was on Zyprexa about a year ago. Wow! I packed on 50lbs over about a years time. While this would have been ok if I were in sumo training, I really struggled with it. My problem for 35 years has also been anxiety/depression. I am on a similar combo as you are. 600 lithium, 150 Zoloft and 200 Seroquel. I can't tell you for sure how effective the Seroquel is in this combo because it and the lithium were started at the same time and both were a first for me. I just know for the last 4 months, it has worked pretty well (jinx). And pretty well is great for me. I do not miss the Zyprexa. Hope you find the right combo.

Abilify works for me in combination w/Prozac, Lithium and Valium.
