Mood Stablizers?

Posted by shasling on May 31, 2009, at 23:05:36

I posted on klonopin,as a mood stablizer. As far as i know its main label use was as the rest of the benzos,to stop seizures. However unlike the other benzos i believe it was openly accepted and not sure if even officialy labled as a mood stablizer as well.

Thing most people dont realize is mood stablizers in reality barly exsist, mood stablizers are usualy seizure and anti epilectic meds that were found to have success in controlling moods.

Just about every "mood stablizer" is first a seizure med, gabepentin, lamictal, depakote, benzos, etc. Then they are usualy off labled accepted as mood stablizers.

The only actualy offical mood stablizer i know of is i believe lithium.

Mood stablizers are just other meds, usualy anti seizure and sometimes anti pscy meds that are found to also control mood.

They never made drugs for offical purpose of mood stablization, however they seem to see a connection of gaba which most seizure meds affect as a prime suspect in controlling rages.

Klonopin is the only benzo i believe that had the general acceptance as being a good mood stablizer.

In the same way although all benzos are used for anxiety i believe XANAX is the only offical one labled for panic.

A good example also is ghb,the horrid demon drug was made by a man dr henri laborit who was obsessed with gaba and mood.So frustrated in how difficult it was to get gaba in the brain he even attempted spinal shots of it.

Finaly he found that adding a hydroxy group to gaba ,a CARRIER allowed it to cross into the brain, much like gabitril which uses synthetic vinyl.

He firmly believed that gaba/dopamine had something to do with rages of mood.He used GHB as well as yes THORAZINE to treat patients and was a pioneer in gettng people at least out of hospitals, stopping barberic surgerys such as lobotmoys and ect,as well as life long sentences to institutions.

With his work on gaba and dopamine, resulting in ghb and thorazine,he saved many from a life of full blown rage.

This is one reason i get furious when people yap out ghb the date rape drug knowing nothing about its chemistry or history.

Or that its also a script med the day after it was banned.

Anyway seems we use the seizure meds, and anti psych meds for there apperant effect on gaba and dopamine and believe for a long time now these two chemicals have something to do with mood rages.

I also can't find klonopin listed as a mood stabalizer only in adjunct with lithium, tegretol, lamictal, depakote, some others too for bipolar II they list klonopin as a good add on for the anxiety. Interesting Phillipa

Anything from the man who made Thorazine should be available.

Yes. And it does work for some, especially when combined with lithium and perhaps other mood stabilizing drugs. Klonopin is also the only benzodiazepine to have a significant affect on serotonin, although it is poorly studied. The work in this area dried up decades ago. The serotonin thing is probably why it depresses some people and has an anti-manic effect for others. I used it before the age of Depakote. It did for me what lithium monotherapy could not to squelch a severe drug-induced manic reaction.

Curious why you are trying so hard,do you plan to ask for it for mood stablization? Its not a mainstream one so its not gonna be found on the average list of them, however far back when most of the current mood stablizers werent around klonopin was the one mostly used. Here is a snip, and then the link which u have to go down to see.

--- Other anticonvulsants are now being used as mood stabilizers
experimentally. Also, Klonopin (an anti-anxiety drug which is also an
anti-convulsant) may be used as a mood stabilizer ---
