Hey everyone,
Has anyone else got a severe intolerance to fish oil? Whenever I take it I feel severely paranoid, and very high anxiety! I know that its very good brain food, but I also read that many people get unbearable anxiety from this stuff.

Me too
Suggestions (because It didnt always do this to me): - lower dosage or take less often
- *change brand - important believe it or not
- take with food only and only in morn/aftI gave up on this sup years ago but it did help anxiety to some degree at a smaller sustained dose but some brands drove me up the wall...seems weird since salmon is salmon.
Try Mucuna pruriens ("velvet bean") instead. Much better anxiolytic in my opinion but I can't take much since it doesnt get along with Nardil. Needs a week or two to build in system...start slow and work up dose.

I never even associated fish oil with any psych problems. Used to just take it. But expensive. Phillipa

>Hi,
I've been taking high doses of fish oil for several years. I take it mainly for the cardiovascular benefits, which have been well documented. My 10 grams daily delivers 1800mg of EPA and 1200mg of DHA. When I first started taking high doses I did have some anxiety from it, but this went away shortly. I use the Costco(Kirkland) brand, which is fairly inexpensive. Even at my high doses, a 40 day supply is only 7 or 8 bucks.

can't think of why this would happen.
try taking just a small amount for a few weeks at first
even .5 g or so has significant health benefits

Hi Gman,
Never heard of this happening to anyone before.
How long have you been taking this?
And do the capsules also contain Vit. E?
Love,

You could always do some experimentation under blnided conditions. Ask a friend to help.

Dear Maria,
Yes, my formula includes Vitamin E on the label.
It is Carlsson's Norwegian Salmon oil.
I read on some other post (maybe another website) how a person was severely intolerant to fish oil UNLESS he took it CONCURRENTLY with a large dose of Omega-6 (like evening primrose oil, Borage oil, GLA, etc.) Maybe that's what I should try - taking a high dose of Omega-6 WITH the fish oil.

Dear GM,
Yes I believe this theory holds ground.
However, do you also know you need to take fish oil longer than 6 months before it will become really effective?
I read a study on this whether fish oil would help people with depression. Several studies were done. Some of only a few months - finding no improvement. Another of 6 months - finding no improvement. But when they studied the effects for longer than 6 months, they found much improved depressed people. The latter was a Swedish study (if my memory serves me right).
Fish oil is beneficially for me too - I take 6 grams daily (but a blend of fish oils - not just salmon). And the relation EPA/DHA needs to be right. The capsules include Vit. E. too. Besides that I, indeed, do take omega 6 (evening primrose oil), only 500 mg/day.
Why don't you take high dose magnesium with the fish oil? I find this works instantly against anxiety. For this purpose I take 1000 grams/day (and ofcourse 75 mg Seroquel + 1 or 2 Ativan to help me sleep).
Hope this info is of help to you.
Love,
Maria
